If we do go to a five day week k979aaa it will be Mon-Fri.k979aaa wrote:Oh by the way anyone who thinks we will get a Monday-Friday job is living in cloud cuckoo land it will be Tuesday to Saturday on a five day week it does not cost royal-mail any extra for our services rendered on Saturday!.
Royal Mail have already done a consultation with businesses in 2011 and that was their preferred choice.
It's obviously going to be the preferred choice of residential customers.
It would be the preferred choice of the staff so less chance of a row over it.
It's the preferred choice of the business because there is more scope for savings in processing, collections and distribution.
There is absolutely no chance of a Tuesday to Saturday or any other combination other than Mon-Fri.
I would bet my shirt on that.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Nobody knows every day in every office is different most part-time are not in the union even so staffing is a management problem/situation. Look at your duty list 1/4 of the scheduled duties should be part-time but their is operational needs which varies week by week.dvbuk55 wrote:Really? Re: mon to friday delivery
Now we come to the crux of the matter k979aaa, it isn't a management problem but a problem for the union - in fact it isn't a problem for management at all - without any clear cut control of the ratio there is a danger of the union being sidelined even quicker and more so if the company is privatised. And as for the duty roster in my office - what on earth has that got to do with the national figure? I already know the ratio where I am and some of those close to my delivery office and it is way below 75/25 which leads me to suspect that even the high proportion of FT in London, it does not compensate on a national level.k979aaa wrote:Nobody knows every day in every office is different most part-time are not in the union even so staffing is a management problem/situation. Re: mon to friday delivery
Royalmail fought long and hard to deprive us all of Saturday premium and double time also most people shop online over the weekend and their staff send the items on Monday (no Sunday collections) most customers/recipients are at home on Saturday, Also I fear Monday collections will go and be incorporated into deliveries it's the pipeline way of things to come all money saving!.fishtank wrote:If we do go to a five day week k979aaa it will be Mon-Fri.k979aaa wrote:Oh by the way anyone who thinks we will get a Monday-Friday job is living in cloud cuckoo land it will be Tuesday to Saturday on a five day week it does not cost royal-mail any extra for our services rendered on Saturday!.

If it any consolation our's is to less staffed than should be it is a management problem we nor the union staff the office for it is their problem if fails it upon their heads the axe should fall for we can only do our best.dvbuk55 wrote:Now we come to the crux of the matter k979aaa, it isn't a management problem but a problem for the union - in fact it isn't a problem for management at all - without any clear cut control of the ratio there is a danger of the union being sidelined even quicker and more so if the company is privatised. Re: mon to friday delivery
This is an ideal oppourtunity to make this a decent job for everyone, severance payments that are acceptable could be negotiated for our members who want to leave, and they are numerous. Those remaining would have a quality of life which most other workers have, everyone would be on a winner except the Union at a ntional level who would lose their weekly subs. Having partaken in a straw poll at my own office Monday to Friday would be acceptable 100%. What other modern Union would condemn their members to work at weekends, in this day and age it is ludicrous when with a bit of foresight there an oppourtunity to rectify it, bring it on.feduppostie wrote:makes me so mad when I see posties on here willing to sacrifice one sixth of our workforce for a Saturday off
this is going to be blunt
if you don't want to work Saturdays then get your stuff together go get another job see ya later
you knew it Saturdays were a working day when you joined
If you have decided that you no longer want this then make the choice and go
don't sacrifice 1 in 6 of your workmates for your own selfish needs, think about what it would really mean
as someone else said if we go to a 5 day delivery then from a money point of view Tuesdays would be the logical choice - would you be as happy throwing your workmates on the dole if it turned out you still have to work Saturdays???? If it
turned out the 5 days did not include Tuesdays???
what sort of person would watch someone they work next to be told their job has gone just so they could lie in bed on a weekend
I've watered down my language from what I wanted to say
but I guess you get my point
If you want Saturdays off make the sacrifice yourself and get another job rather than expecting 1/6 of your workmates to do it for you

It's not the union it's royalmail but you will lose 1/6 of the workforce so every day you will have 18% more mail IF it was averaged out but you will not get Saturday off!.ballee wrote:This is an ideal oppourtunity to make this a decent job for everyone, severance payments that are acceptable could be negotiated for our members who want to leave, and they are numerous. Re: mon to friday delivery
I think you're kidding yourself if you think that after some kind of privatisation Royal Mail could afford to or would be prepared to pay current MTSF terms to 1 in 6 of the workforce in one go to facilitate a Mon-Fri.
There is a reality check just around the corner for some.

Heard the same argument when Alan Johnston tried to get the 5 day week introduced, the biggest obstacle was our luddite membership. No body then wanted to work an extra 1hr and 18mins a day as they said it could not be done.fishtank wrote:I think you're kidding yourself if you think that after some kind of privatisation Royal Mail could afford to or would be prepared to pay current MTSF terms to 1 in 6 of the workforce in one go to facilitate a Mon-Fri.

Re: mon to friday delivery
I'm not sure that I understand your premise ballee, by shortening the working week but still delivering over 6 days meant an increase in the workforce to cover the 6th day, admittedly not in it's entirety but it did create jobs. Now I believe ft is right, it will be a monday to friday week for many reasons but in the same way that the workforce did not increase by 1 6th then the workforce would not be depleted by the same amount, at least not immediately but perhaps over time but then over time the job is going to change.ballee wrote:Heard the same argument when Alan Johnston tried to get the 5 day week introduced, the biggest obstacle was our luddite membership. Re: mon to friday delivery
Ok someone please explain to me how going to mon-fri week equates to losing 1 in 6 jobs?
The volume of mail will be the same only spread over 5 days instead of 6. Well I work my hours in full and do 5 days out of 6 a week. If the volume of mail during the week is increased I can do no more. I cut off now so I will just have to cut off more if that ever happened. Therefore the number of rounds would have to increase to compensate for the extra mail every day. Ok so it may not be as many as needed for 6 day delivery but it would increase. The fact remains there is only a certain amount of mail you can deliver in a day. So yes there would be fewer jobs but not 1 in 6 that's pie-in-the-sky figures. The rest of the job losses could easily be dropped through VR so what's the problem?
Going mon-fri would not lead to the mass cull in work force that some people seem to think and for those of us with a life outside RM it would make life a hell of alot better!
The only real drop would be in union fees due to less members and as the CWU do feck all for thier money most of the time so does anyone really give a sheet?

1. You are only approaching the problem from a DO perspective only. Moving to a 1 in 5 scenario would impact on processing and distribution as well. There would be job losses in MCs and professional drivers as well.Judgee wrote:Ok someone please explain to me how going to mon-fri week equates to losing 1 in 6 jobs?

2. How many VRs (at approx £30 000 each) do you think RM will happily give out? Do they throw them around likw confetti in your area.
3. It wouldn't just mean a drop in subs. The loss of so many members would probably mean the end of the CWU as an independant trade union.
4. If 1 in 6 is "pie in the sky figures" - how many job losses are acceptable to you? 1 in 8? 1in 10?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.
