ive been a postie for the best part of 15 years,i now have a 10 year old son and a 6 year old daughter,i feel ive missed them growing up with working saturdays most dads take there kids out at weekends, and having a sat and sun off would be fantastic for me and many other parents who are posties will agree having 2 whole days off together would be fantastic. some of us have a life SO GET REAL.feduppostie wrote:makes me so mad when I see posties on here willing to sacrifice one sixth of our workforce for a Saturday off
this is going to be blunt
if you don't want to work Saturdays then get your stuff together go get another job see ya later
you knew it Saturdays were a working day when you joined
If you have decided that you no longer want this then make the choice and go
don't sacrifice 1 in 6 of your workmates for your own selfish needs, think about what it would really mean
as someone else said if we go to a 5 day delivery then from a money point of view Tuesdays would be the logical choice - would you be as happy throwing your workmates on the dole if it turned out you still have to work Saturdays???? If it turned out the 5 days did not include Tuesdays???
what sort of person would watch someone they work next to be told their job has gone just so they could lie in bed on a weekend
I've watered down my language from what I wanted to say
but I guess you get my point
If you want Saturdays off make the sacrifice yourself and get another job rather than expecting 1/6 of your workmates to do it for you

Re: mon to friday delivery
There are probably a couple of reasons why it will be a shoo in eventually, businesses are the driving force and by and large are closed over the weekend and joe public couldn't give a toss about receiving mail on a Saturday. When I was delivering I lost count of the number of times people wasn't aware that we even delivered six days a week. Anybody who doesn't think privatisation is fast approaching, despite the protestations and ministerial lobbying, isn't really thinking straight.

then YOU change don't expect 1 in 6 - let me repeat that - 1 in every 6 people you work with - to lose their jobs ( they have families too) so you don't have to

Re: mon to friday delivery
I wouldn't blame anyone who voted for Saturdays off. Even if it meant me losing my job. RM have ruined our short weekend now. Later finishes are rubbish. No football, less time with my girlfriend. Id hold no grudges if Saturdays got the boot.

Ah right so anyone who wants a weekend off is a selfish bastard and should be burnt at the stake?
Get a grip man, just because some people want a reasonable social life doesn't make them a spawn of satan. If there was a way to introduce a mon-fri working week with no compulsory redundancies then what exactly is wrong with that??? The extra work done during the week instead of the weekend would create additional shifts. Voluntary redundancy could also allow those that have had enough the chance to get out with thier knees intact! It is possible to implement a mon-fri working week with no enforced redundancies. Whether RM have the brainpower to proceed with this is of course another matter but get off your high horse. I want a mon-fri week sure and no it does not mean I couldn't care less about my workmates!
Union what Union? Do we have a union?

I think you know full well what he has going on about.
If people VOTED knowing FULL WELL one in six would LOSE their JOBS just so they can watch overpaid footballers trip over grass then they are selfish bastards and should f**k off from the union as well. You know, 'UNION'.....
No iffs no buts.
Nowhere was it mentioned about a Nirvarna where nobody lost their jobs, that's something else all together, and I think you know that only to well.

Re: mon to friday delivery
You come into this job knowing the script about working saturdays.
Fair enough it's a longer day now but still...
I don't think we can accuse Royal Mail of stopping us spending any time with our kids,i think that's being over dramatic.
When my kids were at school i got to pick them up,take them home, sort their dinner, help them with their homework...lots of things 9-5ers don't get a chance to do.
I think i've spent more time with my kids while they were growing up than most fathers get to,even with working a saturday.

Re: mon to friday delivery
For one I do not think that Royal Mail are looking at this stage for a Monday to Friday service. At the NEC in Birmingham 2 weeks ago they launched their new parcel's strategy which was for Royal Mail to deliver parcels shoe box and below and Parcels above. Saturdays gets an even bigger attendance call and the parcels market in The UK is worth 6 billion.
Who knows what will happen if Royal Mail is sold and that is a big if and the 6 day week USO is in thr law and will need to be changed by parliament.
I can understand people do not like working Saturdays , I remember when I started I you to dislike having to a do a GP and then come back to do sorting. In 87 the shorter working week allowed for most to remove that so they finished on their delivery.
Automation now means that people work longer on a Saturday then at any stage for decades. However the agreement allows you to work less Saturdays and how many offices have turned this option down cause they want to finish earlier ?
If Saturdays becomes a non working day then you will have to fit in 39 hours into a 5 day attendance. You may say you do that now but Saturdays are a heavier than a Tuesday is. Part timers on a 20 hour contract will they get pressures to reduce their hours cause of the Tuesday.
Who would need the RDC for anyone in the DO. Who would need a collection driver collecting on a FRiday when it won't be delivered till Monday. network drivers would lose jobs ,why would an inward operation be needed on a friday night. What about all the Saturday only part timers.
The removal of Saturdays will mean up to 1 in every 6 people going in the whole of the industry not just in delivery.
Surely if you want more Saturdays off you demand it in the revision and you see the consequences in your own office as it will have an impact on your times of attendance , the numbers of full time and part time ratio and delivery span but at least you in an office vote on it.

I wish you would stop using the shoe box and below analogy dingo, that's exactly how panic spreads. At the NEC in Birmingham 2 weeks ago they launched their new parcel's strategy which was for Royal Mail to deliver parcels shoe box and below and Parcels above.
The medium parcels service will have a maximum weight of 20kg, and maximum dimensions of 610mm by 460mm by 460mm.
That's the biggest shoe box i've ever seen.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share
