Union Rep married to Line Manager ... WTF ?
In my office , our Union Rep is married to a line manager .. Is this allowed ? A lot of staff feel our " Rep " is now unapproachable as they don't feel he can be trusted to not discuss private issues at home . This has also resulted in us becoming a soft office in terms of fighting for the best way forward for everyone . The Line Manager in question has also had a very rapid and unquestioned rise from Postie to Line Manager as our Union rep rolls over and has his belly tickled by management . Please HELP !

Vote of no confidence in the rep maybe although you have to be a bit careful with this as apparently the rep can accuse the instigator of the no confidence vote of harassment.
I have heard of people trying organise a vote of no confidence but have never really seen it happen.
What do other members think of a vote of no confidence because there are a few dodgy reps around and a vote of no confidence could be very useful in getting rid of them.

Re: Union Rep married to Line Manager ... WTF ?
There would be no conflict of interest with a postie marrying a manager, a Union rep however is supposed to represent the workforce, can't you see the difference?
And for your information it has nothing to do with whether it is allowed or not, of course it's allowed, it has everything to do with whether said marriage is affecting the Union reps ability to perform their duties in an unbiased and professional manner.
Anyway what I would really love to know is whether a Union rep has had a vote of no confidence held against them.

We had one against our rep.
The Area Rep ignored it.

I thought RM had a policy of keeping managers and their spouses in separate offices.

Moya wouldn't lower herself to marry a Postie.
I suspect she considers us all to be a sub species.
And I am pleased to see from reading this thread that a vote of no confidence is taken so seriously by the Union.

The vote of no confidence goes to the Branch.La Poste wrote: And I am pleased to see from reading this thread that a vote of no confidence is taken so seriously by the Union.
Wouldn't you expect the Branch to show support for the rep.
If the first vote doesn't get you anywhere, make sure you know what the correct procedure is and do it again (and again and again if necessary)
Copying in HQ isn't a bad idea.
The idea that one letter is going to solve all your woes is a bit childish.

Re: Union Rep married to Line Manager ... WTF ?
I was imagining a letter written and signed by members and received at Branch.
This signed letter would trigger a visit to the aggrieved centre from a Branch official who would discuss with members their concerns.
This meeting would then result in action being taken at Branch level against said Union Rep.
I was not imagining a letter signed by a number of members being sent to Branch and just being ignored.
What power does Branch have to remove a Rep?
Can a rep be removed if the members feel strongly about it?
If the rep refuses to resign is that it, is there nothing else that can be done?
Thanks.

Re: Union Rep married to Line Manager ... WTF ?
I think if a "letter on no confidence" is signed by the majority of members in a D.O. and sent to branch it has to be the end of the rep right then and there no matter how friendly the rep and branch officials are.
A rep without a mandate to represent isn't a rep.

Re: Union Rep married to Line Manager ... WTF ?
The procedure in our Branch is this:
The vote of no confidence is sent to the Branch.
The Branch is then to organise a meeting for the rep to have a right of reply.
Then another vote of no confidence is to be held.
If the original letter stated:
We wish to pass a vote of no confidence in our rep because he isn't allowing any private cars on delivery since the Delivery Methods Revision - I would expect the Branch to bin it.
The rep is there to represent the members.
The rep is also there to represent the CWU.
Sometimes it is a difficult balancing act.
Branches don't want reps removed at the drop of a hat.
