Working in the outhouse.

This should be interesting! About to start my third Christmas stint at Croydon mail centre,only today I received a letter saying I'll be working in the outhouse building and not the mail centre. Anyone with any experience of working in the outhouse and what can I expect?

If it's what I think it is, thats where they keep spare yorks, sleeves etc. I was in there once flattening cardboard and tidying up. I wouldn't have thought you'd be there all the time though.

I too will be working in Croydon (Beddington Lane) for the third time this year. I remember last year that there was a new extension built and a few 'portacabin' style buildings around some of which did not have proper heating.

I just hope that the breaks are longer than the 25 minutes we got last year.

That's where I've been told I'm going to be working rather than the mail centre, starting tomorrow night.

Can someone give me a basic idea of what to expect as it's my first time working for RM

Around my neck of the woods the outhouse is the toilet at the end of the garden

if its anything like Peterborough house, it will be in a cold unheated building, which more than shows, why its sat empty and unused for years, apart from the 2 months Royal Mail use it.

Outhouses are not nice places.

Good luck to all those working in Croydon. Work hard and you never know they might just keep you on! A few people from last year have worked all year round.

Whenever I've worked outdoors at mail centre I've been provided with gloves and given extra/longer breaks due to the low temperatures at this time of year. If your "outhouse" work involves working in a low temperature area look into extended break times

There are two managers in there that I know from my previous stints. I don't mind not having a canteen but you'd think they could at least have put a couple of vending machines in especially for hot drinks. We didf find some teabags on the first day but no milk,if you're having to bring your own teabags and milk in (which someone else will probably drink if you leave it in the fridges!) then you might as well just bring a flask. Although where to store it would be another issue as there don't appear to be any lockers either. so if you want to buy hot food it looks like the cafe outside the main mail centre or if you're a quick walker you might just get up to MacDonalds in Valley Park and back during the break time.

Yeah I was surprised there wasn't a vending machine of some sort, I've been heading to McDonald's straight after the end of my shift as the half hour break doesn't give you much time, not complaining though as I'd rather have the extra 30 mins pay than an hour break.
