Crewe named in Royal Mail dog attack list

CREWE has been named among the most likely places in the north west for postal workers to be attacked by dogs.

The CW postcode was in a top-12 of the region for reported dog attacks on posties between April 2011-April 2012.

Crewe had 16 reported attacks in the period. The highest was Preston, with 49.

The statistics have emerged from the Langley Report independent enquiry into dog attacks, commissioned by the Royal Mail.

Donald Brydon, Chair of Royal Mail Group, said: “Dog attacks cause injuries and terrible trauma to our staff. Nobody should have to endure this and our staff are at an increased risk of such attacks simply because of the job they do.”


In total, 311 were attacks occurred across the region. Nationwide, there were more than 3,000.

The Langley Report recommends Royal Mail actively pursue legal action against the owners of dogs that attack postmen and women.

It calls on Government to introduce tougher legislation against owners of dangerous dogs, and that Royal Mail takes a more robust approach to the suspension of deliveries to addresses where a dog is thought to pose a threat to employees.

Sir Gordon Langley said the extent of attacks on postal workers was ‘a matter of real concern’, and called for urgent reforms to the law in England and Wales.

Mr Brydon added that Royal Mail would ‘adjust our policies immediately’ to allow for the swifter prosecution of owners of dogs that attack postal workers.
