Had you considered the fact that having started in 98, which is 14 years, they may just be a tad addictive and your doctor was probably right is stopping them? Have you researched any long term effects they may have?
i have mate. my only problem is my tolerance level. your tolerance level is higher the longer you take it, this applies to most medecines/drugs. i have to lower my intake every now and then. other than that, no issues at all.

sounds extremely dodgy to me, buying medicine from places like china is asking for trouble, its probably cut with so much s**t that the medicine itself is a poison

Anyway that handling charge is because Royal Mail paid the VAT for you, and for a company to pay out actually costs money.

However odds are that you will never pay a customs charge again, as there simply are not enough people to check every bag for customs fees so they only pick a certain number each day. You were just unlucky these times.
royal mail didnt pay the vat for me,,,,, the vat was £9.16 which i paid to customs. royal charged 8 quid ''handling'' fee. disgrace. as for the prescription side of the discussion,,,,there are a lot of drugs that become habit forming, i.e. painkillers, especially ''opiates'' which are narcotic painkillers such as tramadol, codiene, etc. people continue to take these to 'manage' their pain levels and as a result need them continuously. wether a doctor tells you to stop taking them or not, if you are in pain then whatever he says is a moot point.
Royal Mail did pay the VAT otherwise your parcel would still be sitting in customs. The only reason customs released it is because Royal Mail paid the VAT on your behalf.
Yes and that is the precise reason why doctors tell you to stop taking them after a certain point, because they are habit forming and the longer you take them the harder it is to stop and pain can and should be managed in another manner. You may not feel it but the longer you continue to take them - especially those obtained from abroad - the more damage you do to yourself.

If your tollerance level doesn't extend to willingly paying an £8 fee why not go abroad to collect the drugs and bring them back through customs yourself, and make a bit of a holiday too while you're over there ? :nana :nana

not very good business sense paying a charge for someone and not knowing if it will be honoured. some people will just say 'well f**k them'' i'll do without. doctors tell people not to smoke but it goes unheeded, as with drink. you can buy drugs in supermarkets that are imported from abroad, so dont take them? as for pain management, it can and should be managed in another manner??? i'll tell that to my mate who has cancer then. some types of pain are just NOT manageable and analgesics are the only option. pain is a very personal thing that cannot be judged by someone who doesnt have it.

the letter that was stuck to the packet stated that customs applied a vat duty to any thing over the value of £15 @ the vat rate which is 20%, hence the £9.16 charge. the 8 quid 'rip off' fee was applied for rm to seal it back up.
The charge was paid by Royal Mail who then got the money back off you . Read the blue letter it opens up and the explanation of charges is in the middle.

the charge is a vat charge though, so why dont customs inform me directly by post at my expense, and miss out royal mail. i can then pay my vat charge directly to customs at a much lesser fee,,,,, the postage has already been paid by me. so it just then needs to be delivered to me less the rip off fee. simples

I think it would just be unworkable for that to happen, imagine if Customs hold and warehouse every inward international mail item they raise a charge on and then write out to the addressee asking them to pay direct to get it released back into the postal network for delivery. If they went about it that way then they would probably make a charge for sending you a personal letter, storage and handling fees, I couldn't speculate the exact amount but I doubt it would be cheaper than the current system where RM pay on you behalf upfront just to get it released into our system.

As pointed out, there simply isn't the space for Customs to hold every single package they want to charge VAT and Duty on - nor do they have the ability or time to inform every single customer of the charges. The system you propose is simply unworkable, not only would it require vast amounts of storage space, to hold the parcel while awaiting charges, it would also require an entire extra support network just to send out lettters, then another set of support to pay the charges. Just so that at the end of that, your item can finally be handed over to Royal Mail to be delivered anyway.
Royal Mail are actually the cheapest - try a private courier next time and see how much you pay, some of them can charge up to £40 handling fees on items.

Some people don't pay the charge and it gets sent back, but the vast majority will because they realise £8 is nothing to get the item they want.
Smoking is appallingly bad for you, and anyone that does smoke is a complete moron. It can shorten your life significantly, so there is a very good reason people are told not to smoke. Drinking is only bad for you in excess, in moderation, certain drinks can be good for you.
Comparing supermarket drugs, to drugs you brought off of some internet site to get around being denied a prescription, are not the same thing. They are from reputable companies, that are governed by the strictest controls and measures to ensure you get something that won't kill you.
Pain is a personal thing, but the effect of painkillers and continued usage of addictive substances isn't - doctors go to medical school for so long for a reason.

Why do I have to pay a handling charge on items I ordered from outside the UK?
If you order goods worth £18 or more from outside the EU and you have not paid the Import VAT in advance, you will have to pay Import VAT on these goods when they arrive in the UK.
If the goods are worth more than £105, customs duty is also payable.
However, whichever UK postal operator delivers your goods will pay these customs charges and will then charge you both the customs charges and a handling fee before you can claim your goods from them.
For example, Royal Mail charges an £8 handling fee on top of the customs charges owed. See Royal Mail’s website for more information regarding customs charges on items ordered from abroad.
HMRC - http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPort ... P140_10548" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
3.5 Why do I have to pay a handling fee to Royal Mail?
If customs charges are payable upon importation, Royal Mail charge a handling fee to cover the costs for carrying out customs procedures paying any customs duties or VAT due and collecting it from you. If customs examination is required, or if information is missing from the declaration, Royal Mail open, repack and reseal the package. Royal Mail fees are itemised separately on the charge label and are collected at the same time as customs charges.

All international courier and postal operators charge fees for their services and HMRC does not have any authority over the level of charges they apply

As they are completely separate from any customs charges, any queries about them should be raised with Royal Mail or Parcelforce Worldwide as appropriate.

 which is a totally moot point, you try telling granny smith that her crippling agonising rhumatoid arthritis that has her hands and fingers contorted in pain not to take painkillers because pain 'can and should be managed in a different manner'',,,,bollox!! painkillers are there to stop pain. people choose addiction rather than unbearable pain, and doctors accept this. no matter how long they go to medical school. my mate has prostate cancer and is on painkillers for the rest of his life. by the way, the internet site i get my stuff from also supplies tesco, and asda pharmacies with the same stuff i get from them. they are also green ticked by mcafee internet site checker. it isnt some dodgy backstreet opium peddler. :Very Happy
