Postal bosses are warned to protect Shrewsbury jobs

Royal Mail bosses have been told to come up with an ‘acceptable plan’ for staff at the Shropshire sorting office earmarked for closure – or face the possibility of workers going on strike.

Officials from the Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) said today ‘all options are still on the table’, including industrial action, over proposals to shut the Castle Foregate sorting office in 2014, putting about 170 jobs at risk.

Darren Jones, CWU branch secretary for Shropshire and Mid Wales, said the union wanted to continue talks with the Royal Mail to come up with an acceptable solution that would protect as many jobs as possible.

He said one major area of concern for the union at the moment was Royal Mail’s plan to offer staff delivery jobs in offices as far away as Chester.

Mr Jones said it was estimated about 90 members of staff out of the 240 employed at the sorting office either cannot drive or have no access to a car.

His comments follow a union meeting attended by about 90 people at the weekend, in which members passed a resolution not to agree to plans for any of the mail processed in Shrewsbury to be moved elsewhere.

The union wants Royal Mail to come up with an ‘acceptable plan’ for alternative job opportunities for staff affected by the closure.

Mr Jones said: “It could mean a number of options, including industrial action. All options are still on the table, we are still trying to talk and resolve all this.”
