The announced departures of Marjorie Scardino and Cynthia Carroll from among the tiny club of FTSE 100 women chief executives has done nothing to enhance the goal of more female role models in the boardroom.
But help could be on the way in the shape of Moya Greene, the feisty Canadian who runs the Royal Mail.
Her goal since taking charge has been to transform it into a fit-for-purpose postal service capable of challenging private sector competitors.
This has meant taking some really tough decisions. The price of the universal postal service – in the shape of the first class deliveries – has been sent sky high to 60p and there is doubtless more on the way.
The burden of the Royal Mail’s multi-billion-pound pensions deficit has been transferred from the postal service to Her Majesty’s Government. This has suited both parties. It has freed the Mail from having to make good the deficit each year and it has given a temporary boost to the public finances. Most importantly, however, Greene has been fighting to bring the Royal Mail into the 21st century. This has meant transforming sorting offices through mechanisation.
The driving force for growth is the parcel service that is being turbo-charged by e-commerce.
The Royal Mail is still trusted by the British public for the reliability and safety of its deliveries.
She has been fighting to update the parcel deliveries by improving the tracking and making it easier for customers to get their packages more efficiently by dropping them off next door (once banned) or allowing them to be collected at post office branches across the land.
Previously, collection often meant a forlorn trip to the sorting office, that was more likely to be closed than open. The parcels business now accounts for 47 per cent of turnover and volumes grew by 4.2 per cent. With a 37 per cent market share in a digital world, where more and more people are ordering online, prospects are good.
In contrast, snail mail is still in decline and volumes in 2012 are sharply down as there have been no census or elections to keep the numbers up.
Overall operating profit climbed to £144m in the past year from £12m. Greene’s approach to shrinking the 160,000-strong workforce is through voluntary redundancy and there is probably more of that to come.
Royal Mail is at the starting blocks for flotation, with UBS and Barclays advising, and – markets willing – should lift off next year.
The future Dame Moya could be the next North American to grace the FTSE.

Why don't they just lick her arse and have done with it.
It's great to make more profit by shrinking the workforce.

I can't find one in Downloads.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

In small print at the bottom of their website are the words "This is Money is part of the Daily Mail © Associated Newspapers Limited" which says it all really.

"The price of the universal postal service – in the shape of the first class deliveries – has been sent sky high to 60p" - so the daily Mail's a bargain at 55p then ?
"Previously, collection often meant a forlorn trip to the sorting office, that was more likely to be closed than open." - try daytime
