A POSTMAN delivering parcels in Burnley had a shock when a thief jumped into his van and drove off.
Police said a man got into the small red van and drove away from Carter Street just before 9am on Monday.
A spokesman said the postman, who had left his keys in the ignition with the engine running, was delivering a parcel at a nearby house.
Officers arrived at the scene and interviewed the postman and the surrounding neighbours.
Neighbouring police forces including Greater Manchester Police were put on alert for the van.
But shortly after 4pm CCTV operators spotted the vehicle making its way down Carter Street, Padiham Road and Dugdale Road.
Officers were dispatched to the scene and the Royal Mail van was stopped.
A 38-year-old man from Burnley was arrested on suspicion of taking a vehicle without the owners consent and theft from a vehicle.
Police also recovered 16 parcels from this particular postal round at Ightenhill Bowling Club.

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Sacked and a sh1t Christmas beckons, he will have all the leisure time to regret his choice, I would not wish it on anyone, I however don't see a positive outcome for this one.
