Re: the mails dropping off....the end of my fitting
When I started with RM many moons ago I used to kick off if I had more than 1 delivery pouch. I had about 300 drops but only 1 pouch of mail, maybe 1 or 2 parcels a day, D2D's once or twice a month, mainly for Double Glazing when it first come out, collect money on the doorstep etc. Now I can have at least 10 rammed pouches and a van full of parcels and I have to listen to the bullshit that the mail is dropping off from the management.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets
Illegitimi non carborundum

I've no doubts mail is dropping off in the internet age but the thing is many households only have one item of mail as opposed to three or four but we still have to deliver it!!!!

It's absolute BS that the mail has dropped off. Do you believe RM management and propaganda or do you believe the guys who have been down on the frontline for 10-20 years? I know who I believe.

If only Karl Pilkington's Bullshit Man was real, he would have his hands full with RM management. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrUnkuiAdvI" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

When i started at this company 9 years ago, starting at 6 finish at 12.30, i never ever has to book docket. Now 9 years later im booking at least 1 hour docket a day! And that is due to there being more mail, most of it white n all.

I know it is hard for people to see that letter traffic is declining as they only see their own delivery and how that has grown. The vast majority of traffic now goes through the automation kit and is now recorded at least once if not twice once on sequencing.
Revenue has fallend due to fact DSA has now meant 50% of the mail is now done by DSA and only comes into the inward part of the mail centre.
You many be delivering more mail on your round but I think your find that the amount of walks you have now is significantly less than back when you first started. Packets have increased as well.

Ive been in post for 30+ yrs and i can tell you now there is far more mail now .Years ago i could have done 2 deliverys and still finished on time ,now im over 1hr every day .The post office say TRADITIONAL mail is down and most probably correct (thats stamped mail ) ask them if junk mail is down and you might get a diffrent answer .We have far more packets ,registers which you have to break away from delivery for more often because of later starts ,more recorded ,tracked items .Health and safety rules seatbelts, not reading mail while walking ,no mail in front of van i can go on forever .You have these teamtalks its endless.Ijust put it on the docket ,lapsing is another one again it goes on docket .So i just laugh at boys who come in early ,dont take break ,run round and break every health and safety rule because one day when they have an accident and they are found not to be wearing there seatbelt etc the managers wont stand by you thats for sure .So to you boys i say would you rather have £70 + a week in your pocket or the DOS its simple

Save the wear on your keyboard Dingo. You'll never convey the logic that more mail to deliver per postie doesn't mean mail volumes aren't reducing.dingo wrote:I know it is hard for people to see that letter traffic is declining as they only see their own delivery and how that has grown. Re: the mails dropping off....the end of my fitting
The letter volumes and call rates are still higher now than when i started 20 years ago but they are much lower than 10 years ago.
That has been reflected in the number of calls on my delivery.
In the early 90's i had what most would now think was a monster delivery of around 800 calls but to be honest if i delivered to 50% of them it was considered a bad day.
Other than the dreaded gas/electric/phone bill days it could more or less fit in 1 or 2 bags, packets were rare apart from maybe brittania music tapes.
From about 98' onwards the mail started climbing, ironically a lot of it down to deregulation in the energy and telecomms markets and the advertising mail that drove, packets started taking off,Sky Digital was born and the consumer debt boom meant every company wanted it's own catalogue.
My delivery in 2000 was down from almost 800 to 320 calls but because i was hitting 90%+ and the profile of the mail had changed i was up from 1-2 bags to 4-5 and sometimes more.
Now we are in a different position again and my delivery has climbed once more to 600-ish calls but my call rate is dropping again,i have less letters to sort than i did with 320 calls although flats seem quite stable but packets....they are climbing exponentially.
I guess that's why the plan is to manage the decline in letters and invest in packets but the game could change again...who knows?
