Union bosses were meeting today to discuss possible strike action over the Royal Mail’s plans to close its Shropshire sorting office in 2014.
Officials from the Communications Workers’ Union were holding talks this morning about what action they should recommend to their members over the planned closure of the Shrewsbury office.
The union has warned that closure may cost up to 170 jobs.
The officials are set to decide on what course of action they will advise their members to take, with a meeting of affected staff due to take place in the next fortnight.
Officials at CWU have already revealed that a possible ballot for strike action is due to be discussed at the meeting.
A Royal Mail spokesman has said it was too early to say what the effect would be on jobs and that the organisation hopes to avoid compulsory redundancies.

Do not name individuals unless you have a link to back it up. Their name was not mentioned in the article, no-one was.theshrew wrote:Shrewsbury workers wont go on strike its BULLSHIT, s:
Especially do not post a defamatory claim that they were possibly drunk. That single post could shout this board down.

A bit short sighted of those Victorian engineers building our railway network not to predict that Royal Mail would now be introducing double-decker artics.conman wrote:who would be balloted , just the shrewsbury workers

All Royal mail workers will be adversely affected by the closure of the Shrewsbury mc. Its one more step towards setting the company up for privatisation and when that happens, along will come new contracts and new rates of pay and all the people sitting pretty saying I'm alright jack will wish they had stuck up for their fellow employees because now you will be stuck on a crap wage and worse conditions, no job security even for those that haven't lost their jobs through compulsory redundancies in 2014, and with high unemployment rates, no choice!! Remember the old saying 'divide and conquer' well that's what they've been doing to you, stick together it affects you all!!

If the whole country isn't considering industrial action in support of Shrewsbury Mail Centre workers it's not that we don't sympathise, not that we don't think similar will happen to us within a few years and not that we're "sitting pretty saying I'm alright jack" but because many remember the strikes three years ago as futile and we realistically know that nothing will stop the programme of mail centre rationalisation and nothing will stop privatisation from which certainly will follow new contracts and new rates of pay, crap wages and worse conditions.bumbum wrote:All Royal mail workers will be adversely affected by the closure of the Shrewsbury mc. Re: Strike talks over Royal Mail Shrewsbury sorting office p
Is there anyone on here who can remember if union bosses discussed possible strike action in the 1970s over the threat to dozens of local jobs with Royal Mail's transfer of work from Wem, Church Stretton, Craven Arms, Ludlow, Oswestry, Ellesmere, Whitchurch, Welshpool, Newtown, Llanidloes, Machynlleth and Aberystwyth Sorting Offices to the new Srewsbury Mail Centre ?TrueBlueTerrier wrote:http://www.shropshirestar.com/news/2012 ... ice-plans/?
