Pity the poor posties! Parcels pile high on China’s biggest shopping day

PARCELS pile high in the busiest shopping day in the Chinese calendar, Singles’ Day.

The tradition, common in the east of the country, sees unattached friends receive a gift.

And a mountain of these presents were seen spilling out of a despatch depot in Guangzhou city, Guangdong province, as brave posties prepared to try and get them out.

The annual event is celebrated on the 11th day of the 11th month in China. It was particularly significant last year in 2011 where the date 11.11.11 was made entirely out of single numbers.

The celebration was started during the 1990s with universities in Nanjing organising events and giving gifts to friends who weren’t in a relationship.

Popular ... it is tradition to buy gifts on Singles' Day

Traditionally it was the case that single people would receive emails and texts from their friends and be invited to dinner or the theatre but now it has become a huge commercial display.
Many shops now give up to 70 per cent reductions on Singles’ Day gifts.
