Denver Postman Ignores Body To Deliver Mail

The US Postal Service has defended a postman who stepped around the body of a man who had collapsed outside his front door in order to make a delivery.

Dale Porch had been dropped off at his home in Denver, Colorado, after work but never made it inside. It was several hours before his family found him outside.

During that time the postman apparently walked around the 46-year-old and did nothing to help.

Kimberly Cordova, Mr Porch's sister-in law, told Denver's 7News: "When we found the body later around noon, he was still warm. Maybe if the mailman had done something, he would still be here."

The family is awaiting the results of a post mortem examination which might indicate whether Mr Porch could have been saved if he had been helped earlier.

Mr Porch's widow Hedy said the postman told the family he thought the lifeless body was a mannequin left over from Halloween.

"I don't know how he can sleep at night," she added.

The US Postal Service said it was investigating the postman's conduct, but described him as "a conscientious and dedicated employee".

"He is someone who would not fail to help a customer, if he knew they were in need," a spokesman said in a statement to 7News.

"This is a very unfortunate situation and one that probably would not happen any other time of year. We are very sorry for the family's loss and have conveyed our condolences, and those of the carrier, to the family."

What are you supposed to do, how many times have you seen someone drunk and passed out somewhere and just left them to sleep it off?

Not only that, if he had stopped to treat him and he died, the dead man's family would have sued him for either failing to treat him properly or attempting to treat while medically unqualified, thats the nature of America these days.

That said he could have phoned 911 unless he doesn't have a cell phone with him, most American households are fairly insular and won't open the door to anybody, you may even risk being shot as had happened to some who came home late at night and got shot by a trigger happy redneck only to find they have shot one of their own.

I think there is more to the story......

Is there a value in Pegasus for dealing with dying people?
Can you imagine trying to get the lino to authorise the o/t for saving someone's life? Especially if it was a Tuesday!

Postman: I had to spend 20 minutes giving mouth to mouth until the ambulance arrived.
Lino: Twenty minutes? I could have done it in 5..........

Ex USPS guy wrote:I worked for USPS for several years and can speak as to what one sees on a regular basis on routes. Seeing people passed out, while not an everyday occurrence, happens enough as to not make one inclined to immediately call the police, render aid, etc. You just don't think too much of it, honestly Added to that is the fact that most carriers are under tremendous pressure to meet ridiculous time stipulations that, in many cases, are nearly impossible. For example, they might give you an assignment that used be considered 8 hours of carrying, except now, you have to get it done in 6. You become so focused on delivering the mail that you usually don't notice what's going on around you.

About 6 months ago, I saw a guy passed out on the tree lawn next to a large industrial building. Called city services which dispatched paramedics. The "lead" guy in the group ridiculed me and inferred that I was some kind of idiotic "do-gooder." Makes one disinclined to take the extra step on many occasions.

Afterall it is around Hallowen!

I have found myself in the unfortunate incident of delivery to a house where a body was just about to be moved out.

I was on autopilot as usual and did not notice that the black vehicle* outside was that of a mortuary/undertaker - I went straight to the open door and dropped the letter on the floor. Only after I had got out that I realised that there was stretcher and people dressed in some sort of black uniform.

I was mortified when on the other side of the street, the body was actually brought out. I sort of knew the lady but not her family. It was not a nice experience and I could not even say much to them afterwards because the lady lived alone and the family was not there next day.

I did not even know that black vehicles (ambulance type) such as that was used transfer (freshly) dead bodies, I would have expected a white ambulance.

I had to step over a deceased person back in the summer. I didn't put the police presence and ambulance together until the officer told me to watch my step whilst going up the close stairs. :Sick
