300 Post Office jobs put at risk in Portsmouth
UP to 300 jobs in Portsmouth are at risk after Royal Mail made the decision to close its delivery office in the city.
Employees at the centre in Slindon Street, Landport, were told by managers last night that a consultation from the beginning of January will decide whether they will be relocated elsewhere or left without work.
The message came after Royal Mail officials visited the building and decided it was not fit for purpose.
The closure will affect people who process mail when it arrives at the office, those who drive mail to airports and people who work in administration, the canteen and cleaners.
The Communication Workers Union, which represents Royal Mail employees, says workers could be relocated to Eastleigh’s mail office in the short term and could then be sent to a new super mail centre which is due to be built in Basingstoke in the next two years.
But Ruth Harris, branch secretary for the union, said she was concerned about the decision.
She said: ‘I am very, very concerned for my members and during the consultation we will do all we can to ensure they are not left without work.’
The crown post office open to the public at the site is not affected by the proposal.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

The Royal Mail will start a consultation on whether to close its delivery office in Portsmouth. Around 380 jobs are under threat. Workers were told a review would start into the Slindon Street operation. The six-month consultation will last until May.
Although some workers will be able to find jobs at other Royal Mail centres, others will have to leave the company. Royal Mail said in the past four years, mail volumes posted to addresses outside the Portsmouth region had dropped by 43%.
Royal Mail’s Programme Manager Scott Torrington said: “Any change to our mail centre in Portsmouth will, unfortunately, impact on some colleagues. This is vital in order to put Royal Mail on a sound, secure and sustainable footing for the future.”

When I was working at Portsmouth Mail Centre there was a lot more than 300 workers there. The news fail to mention that Cashco / POC and PAF AMU operate out of the site where is all this going to?

Portsmouth Sorting Office
On the news tonight that Portsmouth Sorting office is to close with the loss of 3-400 jobs.
So if this happens come next May, where will Pompey get it's mail sorted, Southampton has a hard enough job coping with the mail it gets now, plus it will mean more lorries pounding along the M27.

Re: Portsmouth Sorting Office
Perhaps Gatwick will sort ? and Mail Centre staff redeployed (those who wish to stay) to DOs such as Cosham/Waterlooville/Eastleigh...lots of factors involved here when we talk about Portsmouth Mail Centre given other units based here and the attached DO and crown office. Not forgetting IOW mail. Be interesting to see what management come up with...

That's also going to have an affect. Does it have any affect on the current times that stuff gets shipped over to the IoW?

Re: 380 jobs put at risk in Portsmouth
I would think it is going to take longer for mail for IOW to be sorted as it has to come from there to the mainland then be sorted into its DO then sent back, as its just across from Portsmouth it is logical to keep it there. Eastleigh and Basingstoke may not be that far but will they get the mail sorted in time for the early ferry like Portsmouth manages, dont think so as there is further for the mail to travel to get to those depots and back again. Portsmouth is needed, it may be out of date and not convenient in some ways (lorries arriving through a tiny road) but it is necessary

Re: 380 jobs put at risk in Portsmouth
Maybe RM will close all the current DOs on the IoW and build a super DO over there to cover the entire island. RM might just make any deliveries to the IoW a two-day service. If the night sailings over to the IoW get axed then there isn't too much RM can do. Can the roads on the IoW handle artics and/or 17 tonners?
