Another query from an agency casual.
Ive done a few days with the agency now, and personally I feel its going ok.
However as well as the smoking in the van thing, I am concerned that people are allowed to do delivery (by which I mean, putting letters in peoples letter box) without wearing any high ves clothing of any kind. Two of the times ive done it, has been at night, so people are walking around with high vis clothing at night, this cant be right can it?
Yes ok the bags have a tiny strip of something which shines when light hits it, but if we use "golf carts" which we do, you are not always with the golf cart. So I would hardly call it an adequate amount for a person.
Whilst I am not sure who is responsible for providing the high vis clothing, I cant help but feel Royal Mail is responsible for letting people work, without some.
opinions?

Your manager is responsible for getting you a RM hi-viz, if you've no uniform then it's what little they can do to identify you as working for RM.
Plus I seem to believe it's mandatory to wear them in bad light and where there's danger (at the roadside, in the yard etc.).

Re: Delivery, not wearing a high vis vest
I was under the impression anyone working in public, had to wear one, but if that is now the case it is certainly the case when its dark. Not been told anything about what kind of clothing, but its basically your own fault if you turn up in something not suitable for the out doors, at this time of year. Certainly no Royal Mail clothing.
As for how do people know you are Royal Mail, well the bags have Royal Mail on them, but for me I just wear a generic high vis vest, that Angard gave me last year (no logo on the back however)

yes I have been doing, but that is not the question, the question is should Royal Mail not ensure that people working in the dark are wearing some form of high visibility clothing?Biker Mouse wrote:Are you saying that you have been doing deliveries in the dark??

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

as with smoking, this is VERY basic health and safety stuff, can you really say that Royal Mail thinks this stuff unimportant?

Re: Delivery, not wearing a high vis vest
I know this was an old post but my daughter has just started working delivering Royal Mail but via an agency. When I asked her what outdoor gear they provided for trudging around the streets in the awful weather we’re having at the moment, she said the agency don’t provide any clothing whatsoever. Therefore, she has had to spend a fortune on waterproof and warm clothing just to turn out for the job. Is this right?

Re: Delivery, not wearing a high vis vest
if she asks a manager at the office she is working in they may access to spares. My office keeps some on hand just for this situation.
Its not right, and I think Angard should provide some, especially as they are a subsidiary of Royal Mail.

3.10 Dress Code
All Angard Staff working at Royal Mail are expected to conform to the standard of dress for industrial areas.
Unless you are told otherwise, your attire should be:
Smart and presentable, e.g. dark trousers with a polo shirt. T-shirts may be worn, but must not have
abusive or inappropriate slogans written on them.
All Angard employees should ensure that there are no actual or potential health and safety risks to
either themselves or others, due to clothing, jewellery or personal accessories, whether worn or
carried.
You will also be required to display your Photo id badge at all times whilst on site.
Some sites also require high visibility clothing and protective footwear. Angard will advise you on this.
Delivering mail she would/should be given a high viz, the rest is up to her.
And as per what Trueblue says, there may be spares in other clothing.
