ROYAL Mail is opening a Christmas parcel sorting unit in a Bolton mail centre which was closed two years ago.
The site in Stone Hill Road, Farnworth, has remained unsold since its closure.
It will now be used temporarily to sort through the rising number of packages ordered by people shopping online.
It is one of eight special centres being opened across the UK and expects to handle up to 200,000 parcels per day. A mixture of existing and temporary staff will sort parcels for delivery by posties.
About 400 Royal Mail staff were affected by the closure of the office as part of a restructuring plan across the region.
Workers were transferred to other sites, including Horwich and Manchester, while others took redundancy.
Trade unions, post campaigners and MPs criticised the move at the time, amid fears it would mean a further blow to the efficiency of the mail delivery services.
It was the latest in a string of national costcutting measures at Royal Mail, which led to once-a-day deliveries.
Mark Higson, Royal Mail’s managing director of operations and modernisation, said: “Christmas is the busiest time of year for Royal Mail and our customers. We have invested in eight parcel sorting centres to increase our scale and improve our flexibility during this important time of year for our customers.”
Royal Mail’s 2012 Christmas stamps are available from today.
The five stamps are designed by children’s illustrator Axel Scheffler feature traditional scenes and characters including Santa Claus, robins and Christmas trees.

Christmas will be a disaster. There will be stacks of packets/parcels undelivered by close of play on Christmas Eve. I know it, you know it, and that moron Higson knows it, but unlike you and me, he's too dishonest to admit it.

There will be a lot of untested revisions up and down the Country waiting to hit the fan in brown colours, many haven't yet had their first Christmas so if they are struggling already in the summer, God knows what is going to happen next, we are not looking forward to it....
