It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

The rest day cover begs me to work my day off so that he can get bumped.
The holiday list was picked out of a hat,i was asked to do the picking...and picked my own name first.
To be fair we just go and fill in what we all want and use the list to sort out any arguments.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Re: Summer 2013 - No holidays available!!!!
We do two waves, first goes with seniority to pick 2 weeks, second wave on reverse seniority for the other 2standard weeks. Then it is a free-for-all to book odd days, two years of those 2.5 days to get another week, extra purchased holiday time!
This time last year management tried to pull a fast one, one PT and one FT on leave per section per week (with more like 23 PT on one section than the maximum of 12 that would work with this system)! Most depots have ~48 weeks that can be annual leave, the other ~4 are Xmas pressure, where nobody can be on holiday. Each depot's holidays are supposed to be run on the basis that every single OPG can buy extra holidays to get 6 weeks (30 days), with enough slots to fit these 6 weeks per OPG in the year outside Xmas.
So if you had 100 OPGs, that is 600 weeks that need to be in the system over 48 weeks, so each week upto 13 (600/48) can be on holiday.

Re: Summer 2013 - No holidays available!!!!
I've been a union member for years ( NUM to be precise) and no matter how long you had been down the pits you were all treated the same. I can't believe some of the rubbish I've read on here from so called union men! I've been in the cwu at Parcelforce about six years and can assure you there is no one except management senior to me. We've got this ' seniority' twaddle going on at the moment, most of the lads don't agree with it only the more senile ones. Sorry meant to say ' senior ones'! We had a union meeting a few weeks ago where we all voted and it was decided holidays would be chosen on rolling seniority so over a few years everyone gets a fair go. The union rep said he would put it to the manager for us. Guess what? I just found out He never went! Guess what else? He is the longest server in the depot! Guess what else? He wont knows hit him when i confront with this next week! It's one thing getting screwed over by a boss but another thing to get screwed over by your union rep. And for someone to say everyone gets their holiday choice with seniority, how can they? Kids August holidays last 6 weeks, the 3 lots of 2 weeks. How can, say, the 5th in a group of 9 have a summer holiday with his kids when the first 3 in the group get them every year?

Re: Summer 2013 - No holidays available!!!!
Middle of January now and we still haven't finished the summer leave signing due to general managerial incompetence. Have been told that the number of slots has been reduced and now a lot of people are getting very annoyed. CWU rep doesn't seem to care, probably cos he's got his 2 weeks in August sorted already, and doesn't seem interested in pursuing lapsing...

seniority for holiday picks goes on in our office. Its total crap. Don't agree with at all. Pretty sure its illegal. i just go sick when I need holiday. The really busy weeks I know are rammed I dont even request. Just take them sick. Can back with a nice tan too =D

Re: Summer 2013 - No holidays available!!!!
Our summer holidays are in chaos this year. Nearly the end of January and only half the office have picked their first two weeks. It's a disgrace. Management being teflon shouldered about it, rep doesn't care cos he's near the top of the list. Meanwhile anyone in the bottom half of the stupid seniority list (in an office of 150) with school age children is stuffed and any chance of getting the good cheaper deals is out the window. This is without the difficulty of trying to fit in with wives/partners whose leave years run from Jan to Jan.
No-one told us that after our revision the number of weekly slots would be reduced by 25%.
Two questions:
1. Are there any offices that don't pick on seniority? We use seniority for first 2 weeks, reverse seniority for 2nd two weeks but I'm fairly certain that that this discriminates against families (cue howls from the old guard)
2. Is there any way of getting the number of slots increased? Everyone has been able to get whatever they want in previous years.
Ta, I'm off to tear out what's left of my hair

Re: Summer 2013 - No holidays available!!!!
The number of slots at a depot should be based on each OPG having 6 weeks holiday per year (because we can all purchase extra annual leave upto 30 days, claim form needs returning before end of February for following tax year), normally with the 4 weeks leading upto Xmas Day being unavailable.Johnny A wrote:No-one told us that after our revision the number of weekly slots would be reduced by 25%.
So lets say there are 100 OPGs, that is 600 slots that should be in the system, to be typically taken over 48 weeks. That equates to 12/13 OPGs being on holiday per week on average.
Like most things in RM, POAL is kept very hush-hush within the depot, so many PTers at least have no idea it even exists.

I only knew about the paid extra annual leave from here. When I asked a LM about it I was told full timers only can get it! I tried to correct then politely but they walked away.
