Temporary parcel sorting centres open to deal with Christmas rush

Two temporary parcel sorting centres are to be opened in Scotland to deal with the Christmas rush.

Eight sites will be run across the UK, with one being set up in Bathgate, West Lothian and Eurocentral in Lanarkshire to cope with the increase in online shopping.

Opening this week, they will sort a "significant proportion" of the parcels sent before they are distributed around the country.

It is part of a series of measures brought in in the run up to the festive season to make sure post reaches its destination on time.

Paul Kelly, from the Royal Mail, said: "Christmas is the busiest time of year for Royal Mail and our customers. Royal Mail has invested in eight dedicated parcel sort centres to increase our scale and improve our flexibility during this important time of year for our customers.

"As we do every year, we encourage people to post early and order presents early to help us spread the workload of handling the festive mailbag in the run up to Christmas.

"We also encourage people to make sure they correctly address their cards, letters and parcels, including using a postcode."
