I cannot believe that people take it upon themselves to micro manage so that square pegs fit into round holes. Mandatory equipment is mandatory equipment. It does not matter whether it's stupid. In all jobs you live by the rules, die by the rules. Even the stupid ones. The rules are stupid will not stand up as a valid defence. I tell you, I think that trollies are awful. I think they're slow and I think they're bad for your health. BUT, my thoughts are not on RM's agenda. I do what they say should be done. In spite of my feelings. Others seem to go the other way. "My employer is stupid, ergo I can do what I want."

I complained to the DOM about managers doing walks and not using the LWT's. His response was 'They have'nt been trolley trained'

So how does that work, presuming these same managers trained the OPGs?

Postal1, if you suffered from a bowel disorder why would you even be on a trolley delivery ? Your circumstances and medical condition would have been taken into consideration during the re-pick stage ....... wouldn't they ?

What's the deal on leaving the trolley outside offices and shops - I was never a biker so never away from my mail.

But I had go upstairs into a call centre type room with people everywhere, asked for the name on the packet - got pointed to this smiley person; I got the packet signed and I told him I should not have to come up and leave my trolley unprotected.

They have a reception area but no reception so mail is usually left on table or if lucky someone is having a fag and things get signed; something to sign at least 3/4 times a week.

The second time, I went upstairs again, asked a lady if there was a receptionist, she said she does the job. Then asked if the bell was working, she said they cannot hear from upstairs (does it work???). I got her to sign and told them off again - that I can get into trouble if someone steals esp specials from my trolley. She asked if they had more mail, I told her they were downstairs - she was not happy and marched downstairs in her stilettos -fancy that.

I am so annoyed about the walk - it is a full time walk but I am part time and not given more hours; because they think (and know) that I can cope. The guy in charge gives himself big loops to keep most of his old walk in order to keep the tips

If your trolley is going out of sight, you lock it up with a Royal Mail lock to an immoveable object and even then take all Specials with you, end of! Depending upon the risk assessment of your depot area, you can leave the trolley locked for 2/5/10 minutes without getting back in sight, anything more and all mail should be removed from the trolley and taken with you (read highly improbable unless you are close to finishing or close to emptying before replenishment at a bag drop location). If IB or management catch up with you and the current practice you have while delivering upstairs, it will be instant P45 time...

Trolleylover, I thinkyou might be talking about the HCT, but I think this thread is more about the LWT (Golf-buggy type). HCTs are not mandatory, of course not - lol

Anyway, I wonder what the rule is as regards leaving the LWT out of sight even for 2 minutes. You cannot always take the damn things into offices or blocks of flats... In the example I gave, I took the LWT into the main building but has to go upstairs to look for someone to sign the mail - their door is not locked and other staff can easily take things.

I suppose we have to trust people (office workers and shop keepers) but... I had to tell a partner today not to tuck in the flaps of my bags as I always cover up the mail - there is no point in advertising to people what I am carrying and it is easy to lift a packet.

Pairing and P&L is a real eye opener - you see all sorts of practices from posties. If some are caught with their conducts, it will be a reprimand or even sack but they often make their partners complicit in their inappropriate behaviour.

But we're meant to wait a couple of minutes to get an answer aren't we? Also, getting a signature can take longer than that.

First of all LWT's are completely unsuitable for shops and businesses.
Common sense tells you that,what numpty would risk assess a busy main street and say it was suitable to leave two unsecured bags of mail on the pavement while you entered a shop or business?
If possible an HCT should be used or a van and small pouch.

Secondly when using an LWT at a domestic address,in 99% of cases the trolley should be in sight which according to the security guidelines means "there is a significant deterrent to criminal activity if the delivery officer is in line of sight".

The problem is that the managers will rarely ever back the postman especially if the customer tries it on by saying something really negative about the postman even if it is not entirely true. Some customers just want a revenge and get posties in trouble if they don't get their way.

The issue most of the time is with other posties that allow customers to have the wrong expectations... The owner of the walk is away for 3 week, so I am lumbered... He probably gets agood tips from the shops and offices and will bend backwards for them. But that does not help the cover.

I don't like waiting and they should just get the door bell or intercom fixed - simple really!

Common sense is a wonderful thing

When I told my partner that I always fasten my bags (panniers), he looked at me like I was just being officious and weird... And this was the first item on RM Delivery Equipment Security for LWTS.

They also should not be used in high risk areas and tower blocks; so that means smaller loops and bags on the shoulder but where it falls down is where you have old people's home (which I do after shops - 47 flats) and 2/3-stories flats.

I try to complete most of the shops and then squeeze all remaining items on 1 bag to do old people homes and then leave bag and trolley in lobby.

I work with a prat that refuses to use the LWT, so he leaves a bag at the end of the cross section of streets - pillock!

Leave a card with the mail and they can go and sign for it.
