A former Royal Mail sorting office site in Northampton could be used for a new primary school in the town centre, it has emerged.

Northamptonshire County Council has put forward plans to increase the size of 11 primary schools, including Castle Primary School, near Northampton town centre.

A recent four-week consultation on the plans resulted in 250 objections from parents of pupils at Castle Primary, who were concerned about plans to create an annex in a commercial building.

Councillor Andrew Grant, cabinet member for children and young people, said at a meeting on Monday he had met parents and there was a “strong view” that expansion of the school should be done by enlarging the existing site by purchasing land nearby, belonging to Royal Mail.

Other suggestions put forward by parents included housing the new school in a nearby auction house or buying a strip of grassland belonging to a parent of a child at the school.

Councillor Grant said: “I’m delighted to see the community in Castle has come back with some suggestions about the site for the new school.

“I’ve had an opportunity to walk round the Royal Mail site and we have made an approach. If we can’t proceed and can’t buy the land, then at least we have taken up the opportunity to see what we can do.”

Councillor Grant has also agreed to hold a public meeting in Delapre before a decision is taken to expand Delapre Primary School.
