Do Royal Mail not put the first initial of the DO and a number on the back of the vans any more? I haven't seen it on any new vans. What happened to all the old ones? Did they get scrapped? I've seen a couple in use for collections, but why not use those for P+L or use the P+L ones for collections?

My office have a letter representing the office before the number. As for the old vans we still have them all apart from the minibuses, they've probably been auctioned off or scraped.

Yep, keeping the old vans until they are killed in action it would seem. 6 years for a Combo with over 70k miles on the clock, should have been changed years ago but this is RM and they don't do things properly it would seem

So what are the old vans being used for if they have new ones now then? What were the minibuses used for? Surely they didn't still have the postbus a few years ago? I thought that was long gone.

The old vans get auctioned when they are replaced. The minibuses and crewbuses are/were used for transporting walking postman from the DO to the start of their walks. They have now been replaced with the smaller shared vans in offices that have had revisions as part of RMs modernisation program.

The old vans are being used for P & L deliveries as the Bippers are too small. The mini buses were used for conveying staff out to their delivery point. ie 6/9 postmen, 1 driver who done the large packets etc and dropped off timed bags to the posties. RM keep going on about team work now but on convey buses we worked as a team...well most of us did at my office. Most of my office went out on delivery via convey bus so obviously we had quite a few, think we have 2 left now out of about 15.

Crew buses.
One of the reasons for those was....
About 8 years ago some graduate from RM towers thought it would be interesting to pack us into a crew bus and send us out as one to complete deliveries in teams of 5 or 6.
We were to roll into an estate and jump out like some kind of commando unit and kill a delivery before moving on to the next.
They called it star burst.

In reality we looked more like one of those clown cars where the occupants never seem to stop climbing out and since you are only as fast as your slowest member, there was a lot of standing about smoking and not a lot of delivering happening....for that reason i quite liked the idea.
It was cancelled pretty quickly but some of the vans remained.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share
