Post workers unhappy with 6% raise

Striking postal workers in Gauteng yesterday marched from Cosatu House in Braamfontein to the local post office to press their demands for a R2000 increase.

The members of the Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) rejected the post office’s 6% increase, which they said was minimal, considering their average salaries were R6000.

About 250 workers marched to hand over a memorandum to the post offices in Biccard and Ameshoff streets.

CWU provincial secretary Aubrey Tshabalala said that they would not rest until their demands were met.

“Unilateral implementation of a mere 6% salary increase without any engagements with workers or trade unions points out the arrogance of the highest order by the group’s executive management.”

The CWU also wanted a housing subsidy increase of R1000 and R1200 bonuses in the present financial year. They were also demanding that the Postbank be transformed into a state bank and that all casual workers be employed permanently.

Simon Magome, an HR officer from the post office said they had noted the workers’ concerns but could not guarantee a response to their demands within the 24-hour deadline set by the CWU.

“Your concerns have been noted and I can guarantee you that they will be dealt with,” he said.
