i always had the impression that tuesday would be the preferred day to lose? naturally delivery men would like saturdays off and this is understandable as it is such a late finish now, the question is which day will go?...............

The Kye Dudd line is that we have lost over 60,000 jobs and therefore x number of members in the last 5 or so years so was there no formula that could have resulted in a mon-fri for those left? Ive never heard Mr Dudds answer to that so can anyone see where hes coming from?

If we work 5 out of 5 days why would we need day off covers.

Yes, I think there would be enough volunteers to cover the reduction in head count, however it would mean that overall there will be less staff and therefore less recruitment and more on benefits.

To expand on this point. If we did go to 3 day weeks thats 120,000 more people who would need to claim benefits such as tax credits etc, and 120,000 less helping to pay for them through their taxes. Could the exchequer really take a ¼million hits like that.

Well they must have the clearest crystal ball in RM mainly for two reasons:

RM haven't the faintest idea what will be happening after March 2013
RM will be privatised long before the ten years are up

There are a number of concerns over what is happening within Royal Mail at the moment. Clearly Off Comm have not just come out with these consultations but have been having discussions with Royal Mail.

Royal Mail have been complaining to Off Comm over the decision to allow TNT a lience to deliever to to addresses in West London and Now Victoria. TNT in those postcodes have already captured 6% of the mail including some big posters like Harrods , Trail finder and the Enconmist. 50 % of our work is now subject to DSA and therefore the competiors can easily under cut Royal Mail. TNT managing director Nick Wells business misson is to set up other delivery offices within the rest of the UK covering 40 % of the UK.

TNT staff are on less than half what a Royal Mail full time staff earns and do not have pensions , the amount of annual leave , sick leave provisions , paid meal relief , shift allowance or reserve rights payments. The TNT workforce is not restricted to a post code boundary and delivers to a address once or twice per week. They have no quality of service restrictions and since the West London TNT operation was lauched Royal Mail have recorded over 76 thousand TNT items put back into Royal Mail within 26 weeks of the operation. Many more have likely not been recorded. Due to the farce at Off Comm Royal Mail cannot surchare TNT for the service and have delivered a lot of these items free of charge.

Royal Mail faced with the above and the face it is likely to increase are seriously considering setting up a similar wokforce on inferior conditions to deliver the growth of packets and the media market of unaddressed and addressed items and simply manageing the decline of the USO and our current jobs and terms and conditions.

This would be an unacceptable move by the company but dont be under any illusions that is indeed what they are thinking and it does not surprise me in the least. Oh just to cap it all there is due to be announcement on the pension scheme in the next few weeks which will be alarming to say the least. Clearly whilst we have the safest scheme in the land for back service , there is clearly a problem with the pension scheme going forward.

Add this to the fact there are real problems over the new regional management breaking the terms of the agreement we are I would suggest in for some stormy times.
