The Royal Mail has launched an interactive timeline charting its 500 year history.

The timeline for the postal service chronicles important dates in British history with key developments at the Royal Mail, accompanied by music from through the ages.

'Royal Mail Heritage' shows the evolution of the postal service from its founding in 1516 to the present day.

The timeline uses a parallax design that gives users a sense of depth and the illusion of 3D. The design generates a personalised experience because different layers move at different speeds depending on the way that the user navigates along the timeline.

The timeline is also device responsive and there is a mobile version available.

Lioness attacks mail coach
20 October 1816

In October 1816 the Exeter mail coach on its way to London was attacked by a lioness at Winterslow Hut, near Salisbury. The lioness had escaped from a travelling menagerie.
