I have worked under this Leadership and Appraisal type syetem.

It can and does work if applied correctly , honestly and transparently. If the Manager thinks about his/her job ; its Key Elements and areas for improvement (on an objective and personal level.... and is actually honest in their evaluation. Then it can work.

Where RM really falls down is the quality of Managers. I have met a couple of good DOMs ; but sadly never quality Line Managers.

Too often Managers are not Managing. They are tidying, prepping , sorting overtime out. At no point have i seen future planning ,or , people management skills, in evidence.

I have met good managers to, but at the end of the day it does not matter what they do the final point is that savings must be made. It does matter if a Unit is workng to 100 BSI or not the people behind the driving process do not care, they believe that all Units are underperforming even though they are not. My Office were for years told they could lapse more, which they did under duress 6 weeks ago the revision team came and added 50 hrs to our to our office hours. This meant all the talks our previous manager gave us over the years was absolute lies.

Well when bikes were used it could have meant repairing your inner tube, or possibly coming at the right time, but without joke, it means that the manager is delivering the results that his superior craves for in a manner that usually is not remotely connected to any working agreements, principles or health and safety rules.
