Postman's life is 'ruined' by theft

A Postman destroyed his 17-year-career when he was caught stealing money from greetings cards he was supposed to be delivering.
Michael Peach, of Morris Road, Kingsthorpe, pleaded guilty to three charges of stealing envelopes, illegally opening them and stealing £30 while working as a postman at Northampton mail centre.

Peach, aged 51, had been employed at the centre for 17 years when he was seen taking and opening the envelopes.

Clare Fitzpatrick, prosecuting, told Northampton Magistrates' Court a colleague had observed Peach opening envelopes and saw him take something out and put it into his pocket. The colleague watched as Peach then tore the envelopes into small pieces and put them into an empty crisp packet.

He reported what he had seen to Royal Mail and Peach was arrested and cautioned while his van was searched. Six postal packets were later recovered from his rucksack.

Ms Fitzpatrick said: "He has taken a total of £30. He said he did not know why he had done it but he had been experiencing panic attacks. He said he had felt rotten and was glad he had been caught. He felt he had let everyone down."

Nicholas Levinge, defending, said Peach was a man of previous good character and he could not explain his actions, but his life had been ruined by what he had done.

He said: "His normal life had been completely ruined. He has lost his job so his 17-year-career is at an end. The effect has been totally devastating and he has had months of worry, depression and anxiety. His wife and children are all upset and can't believe what he has done. His life has been turned upside down and so have the lives of all those around him."

Magistrate Patrick Fleming said: "This is an extremely serious breach of trust. It was carried out over a short period, but it was a serious breach of public confidence. We are looking at a high level of community service."

The hearing was adjourned to October 12 for pre-sentence reports.

I have to say that theft from the post is the only thing I would grass another postie up on, but not to management would not trust them to sort it out.

Seen it mate. When I was office rep, I went with the IB to search two houses. They leave no stone unturned and for me, as the father of a teenage girl, to stand there while the IB went though the room of a girl just like my daughter looking for stolen property made me think what an absolute turd anyone must be to steal from the mail. I'm standing there thinking "You bastard. How could you put your family through this?" They forget, this isn't a box of screws from a building site which will never be missed, but cash which someone like ourselves has worked to get and has sent it to some kid very much like our own kids. They're stealing from their own, and that is never right.

and I still fill them in I get 1 new cheque book a month. Also did you know it costs more to the merchant if people pay by cheque so...................

The first staff case I saw was somebody thieving watches being sent to a repairer in Liverpool,he was tipping 2c PPI , the managers thought he was wonderful . He was opening packets but the interfered with packets, didn't look if they were scuffed/ripped through fair wear and tear . Trying to sell watches in pubs wasn't very clever!. He was shopped by a member of staff. No prosecution like the guy stealing driving licences destined for the local DVLC . Somebody on Inward hid mail in the false ceiling of the gents , it was only discovered when the gents was refurbished . He wasn't prosecuted but he lost all his pension money and only had six weeks to do. Normally you know when there's anything wrong when you see the IB swarming allover the place or their stings with £10 notes etc . They'd have you for a elastic band and the very mention of the IB and the hand on the shoulder used to put the fear of God up people , but it's different now.
The worst case was the Asian Lady and the £80,000 theft and her subsequent 15 months Prison sentence, god only knows how much trouble that must have caused amongst relatives in famillies .
Where I do have a problem is the age old double standards with RM . The worst case was a so called Independent Investigator telling a Postie to ignore friends of a manager thieving . He shopped them to the IB so RM closed ranks and sacked him on a trumped up B&H charge. Usual RM bent fit up "selective interviewing " of "witnesses " that they knew didn't like him .Usual small minded petty , territorial vindictiveness but you wouldn't expect anything less .

apart from bent managers thieving pound coins from envelopes that have been mangled by the machines and expect the unofficial manager's union to look after them.I agree it gives all grades and mgt a bad name.
