A WOMAN who has run a post office near Machynlleth for 30 years has been presented with an award.Ann Williams, who has run Cwmllinau Post Office from her house since 1982, was presented with a long service award to mark her achievement.
Incredibly, the Cwmllinau Post Office has been in Ann’s family for over 70 years. Before she took it over in 1982, it was run by two of her aunts for over 40 years, from when the post office first came to the village, which is also known as Cwmlline.
Ann, 65, said: “It’s been quite a surprise, but a lovely one to receive this award. I have enjoyed my time at the Post Office and can’t quite believe how the time has flown by. I am very lucky as many of my customers have become my friends over the years, and this makes the award extra special for me. I am very grateful for their support and loyalty over many years.”
Formerly a clerk, Ann decided to keep the branch in her family when she took over from her aunt Susan Pierce 30 years ago and moved it to her Llys Anwel home.
Back then in the days before email, there was still two deliveries every day, a first-class stamp cost just 15.5p and a second-class stamp was just 12.4p.
“It’s changed a lot over the years and the community is getting smaller,” added Ann.
“Back then we didn’t have computers and did it all by hand.” Though she manages the branch on her own as sub-postmistress, Ann is able to call upon a relief subpost-master to allow her chance now and then for a well-earned break.
