Sorting office axe 'will hit economy'

Shrewsbury’s economy will be damaged for future generations with multi-national companies choosing elsewhere to relocate, if the town’s sorting office is axed, it has been claimed.

A motion has been submitted to Shropshire Council and Shrewsbury Town Council urging all members to oppose Royal Mail’s plans which threaten 162 jobs at the Castle Foregate site, which has been processing mail since 1880.

The motion, which will be on the next full council meeting agenda, says: “This council condemns the proposals to close the Royal Mail sorting office which will result in work being relocated outside the county and the Mid Wales area.

“We fear that the loss of so many jobs, associated investment and the business related to the sorting office will be a further significant blow to the overall economic wellbeing of Shrewsbury.”

And council leaders claimed the town will find it harder to attract businesses if postal times are hit.

Jon Tandy, Shropshire councillor for Bayston Hill, Column and Sutton, said: “It will have a great impact on future companies coming to Shrewsbury to trade. Is a big company going to relocate to Shrewsbury as they’re invariably going to want a mail centre pretty close? The most likely answer is no.”

Councillor Alan Mosley, for Castlefields and Ditherington, said: “Any new businesses will be looking at services provided and if the postal service is better elsewhere then this could be a significant disadvantage for future investment.”

Royal Mail says the move was due to ‘challenges from digital communication, competition and mail volume decline’.

John Tandy also happens to work in the Shrewsbury Mail Centre.

And will the council be prepared to stump up the cost of the annual savings that would have been made?

But doesn't Jon Tandy, Shropshire councillor for Bayston Hill, Column and Sutton, realise that in terms of future companies coming to Shrewsbury to trade or a big company thinking of relocating to Shrewsbury they just might be delighted at the chance of suitable large premises close to the town centre and railway station ?
And as for "they’re invariably going to want a mail centre pretty close" do they really believe that it's necessary for businesses to take all their outgoing mail to the nearaest Mail Centre ? "The most likely answer is no”

Given you always seem to be well informed Dodger, perhaps you might like to put a figure on these annual savings?

Yes he does, along with a couple of hundred other employee's who's jobs are on the line. Likewise Councillor Alan Mosley doesn't work at the mail centre, so Biker Mouse, what is the point of your comment?

... and all you are doing his shouting. Any chance of a debate instead of swearing. I would be more impressed if you took his points apart one by one in a respective manner, instead your just living up to the description that your chosen nickname has. :thumbdown :thumbdown :thumbdown

Oh the rules also ask for debate rather one line insults so might be worth reading them again just to refresh your memory.

Does it have to have a point. All knowledge is good so the fact that John Tandy works there is neither detrimental nor positive to the argument he puts forward. It merely puts into context his comments.

He works there so its good he has first hand knowledge, he also has a vested interest in keeping it open. Some may see the fact that he is working there may taint his viewpoint and not leave him open to any benefits that the move may bring. So as you can see the fact that Biker mouse has told RMC that John Tandy works at the affected MC is irrelevant, its what individuals read into it that needs to be challenged, if indeed it even needs to be.

"fact that Biker mouse has told RMC that John Tandy works at the affected MC is irrelevant", I agree, so why make the comment in the first place?. Had he had made the statement that John, along with 200+ employee's might have a tainted viewpoint towards keeping the mail centre open, then the question would not have been asked.

Any benefits a move might bring? Well if anyone considers being asked to do a round trip of 86 miles to Chester , 5x a week, which is what the review team are expecting the processing staff to do a benefit, then obviously I have a tainted view towards closure along with the rest of my colleagues

No, I'm not a gaffer in disguise.
Two years ago the CWU supported Jon Tandy as a Prospective Parliamentary Candidate
.
Date: 10/05/10
(To all Branches)
To: The Branch Secretary
Dear Colleague
CWU SUPPORTED MPs/PROSPECTIVE PARLIAMENTARY CANDIDATES: GENERAL ELECTION 2010
It will be recalled that the CWU had 14 members of the CWU Parliamentary Group prior to the 2010 General Election.
Bob Laxton MP, MP for Derby North, stood down. John Grogan MP for Selby stood down following a boundary change. Of the remaining 12, 10 were re-elected on May 6th 2010.
Geraldine Smith, MP for Morecambe and Lunesdale, was not successful in seeking re-election, nor was Gordon Prentice, MP for Pendle.
Together with the CWU Group, the CWU was supporting: Margaret Curren (CWU member and former Member of the Scottish Parliament) in Glasgow East, Mark Tami for Alyn & Deeside, Gerry Ryan, PPC for Croydon Central, Gary Heather, PPC for Tunbridge Wells and Jon Tandy, PPC for Shrewsbury and Atcham. Margaret Curren was successfully elected as MP for Glasgow East and Mark Tami was also elected in Alyn and Deeside.
.

Came third with just a fifth of the votes and down 13½% though .
Conservative Daniel Kawczynski 23,313 43.9% +6.3
Liberal Democrat Charles West 15,369 29.0% +6.1
Labour Jon Tandy 10,915 20.6% -13.5
UKIP Peter Lewis 1,627 3.1% +0.4
BNP James Whittall 1,168 2.2% N/A
Green Alan Whittaker 565 1.1% -1.2
Impact James Gollins 88 0.2% N/A

Thanks Teebs! It was meant as a matter of fact statement with no ulterior motive. I don't know why it upset Kevmorg so much!

Perhaps you may want to read my post again, because you appear, with the nature of your reply, to have missed the point I was trying to make. Indeed you seem to have taken offence where none was meant.

Guess I took offence to the fact that I asked BM what the point of his comment was, and expected a reply from BM, not the moderator. Although I understand you calling order to the comment that included swearing, I do not understand why you couldn't allow BM to reply himself. There's a difference between moderation and big brother.

I didn't post as a Moderator. I posted as an ordinary member. As a Moderator I am still entitled to opinions, and to post them. I even give everyone a clear message when I am moderating by using a tag line in my signature.

Can we now get back to the topic of the MC, rather than bringing it down to a personal level. Thats a more important issue than who works there, and what my job is on RMC.
