Cambridge mail centre workers ready for fight against closure

by Cambridge mail centre reps, CWU Eastern no 4 branch

Royal Mail has just announced plans to close Cambridge mail centre and move the work to Peterborough and Chelmsford.

Local CWU union reps have made counter-proposals under the agreement that ended the last national postal dispute. All have been rejected.

And there have been no talks about the 190 workers’ future. Royal Mail has given its “preferred option” in a review, which is likely to become the “final decision” in around three months. Every review so far has ended in a mail centre closure and the loss of jobs.

The local CWU branch has issued a statement opposing the closure. For many of our members, travelling to Peterborough or Chelmsford is not a reasonable job offer.

A worker in the north of Cambridge would have a two and a half hour journey each way by public transport to Peterborough mail centre.

The branch plans to hold members’ meetings to discuss fighting the closure.

CWU members in St Albans voted for industrial action last week to stop the closure of the Station Road delivery office in Harpenden. The closure would lead to 50 workers being relocated and have a negative impact on the service.
