I have been doing full time hours at S********** MC since February. Angard still owe me £250 from Christmas, but I'm so desperate for a job, I'm sticking with them. There are about 6 of us casuals that are there regularly.
Recently, I was told that we won't be getting as many hours as before because Angard have to rotate the shifts so that people who have been on the books for months, could get a chance to work.
No problem with that, I thought. However, now work is almost impossible to get. I've always prefered the night shift, therefore I don't appreciate it when they phone me at 2pm (usually waking me up, having work a shift the night before) but if they haven't woken me up, by the time I phone them back the shift has been allocated to someone else. I've now missed out on a whole week of work because they texted me while I was aslep saying that there was work available this week. Once again, I phoned them. Once again, every shift this week has been taken! So there's me skint for another week.
Anyone else get treated like this?

Re: Work is now 'first come, first served?'
We all get treated like this - if you miss the call they will always go onto the next person. They are only interested getting the correct number of bodies in not who - unless the MC requests particular people by name (Angard frown on this) or with specific knowledge/skills (they allow this more).
They used to text everyone at our Mail Centre for just a few places. If you were not one of the first to phone back you did not get in.
They are supposed to be sharing the work more rather than a few getting 30-40+ hours and the rest getting < 10 per week - not sure if this is happening properly yet. We still seem to have some who "get in most of the time".

Yes missing the "call" is a real bummer especially if your in the car, on the bog or asleep from a previous shift. However the answer is and always has been DON'T RELY ON ANGARD FOR WORK! you have to approach the Managers on the floor when your in and let them have your number, show your availability for last minute work. Prove your a worker, get yourself known! Basically prostitute yourself to RM, it isn't pretty but hey 8 hour shift ot NO shift...it isn't rocket science . With the economic situation as it is needs be and needs MUST. Sod the Union I want to work.

Everytime I ask a manager about work, they just tell us 'it's not up to us anymore' They seem as frustrated as us. Even more so when they have really useless casuals in. One's that don't have a clue or ones that disappear for an hour on a 10 minute break.markadam1962 wrote:Yes missing the "call" is a real bummer especially if your in the car, on the bog or asleep from a previous shift. They now book people in for 1-2 weeks at my mail centre .. leaving many workers(who were not booked) skint for up to 2 weeks.
The casual role is "as and when required" so it really is expected to get screwed over sometimes. Find another job, a fulltime one .. but stay with Royal Mail/Angard and treat it as your second job.
