BUSINESSES in a commercial centre on the outskirts of Truro are aghast at plans from the Royal Mail to stop selling stamps.
The sorting office at Newham has announced it will discontinue the sale of stamps from September 24.
Firms in Newham – where more than 1,000 people are employed – say the decision is bad news for an area trying to build on its business credentials.
The vast Royal Mail centre is also popular with many other postal service users who enjoy being able to park directly outside.
Melinda Rickett, director of Newham-based Creative Edge Design, said: "We have used this fantastic service for the past 10 years.
"The staff are always helpful and friendly.
"It really helps our business, as we can call in with our mail on our way out of Newham in the evening to catch the last post at 6.30pm, which means our business post arrives the next day with our customers."
Businesses in the area have been working together as the Newham Improvement Partnership (NIP) to look at ways of promoting the district and gaining better facilities and infrastructure. The NIP discussed the issue of stamps at their last group meeting on August 22 and said they are very disappointed with the Royal Mail decision.
NIP member Russell Dodge, from Business Location Services, said: "We have used this service for 23 years. Being able to access the postal service at the sorting office is an essential part of us conducting our business, and we have always found the staff to be very friendly and helpful.
"This is typical of the decline in the services to businesses being provided by Royal Mail. They should realise they do have customers who want to use their service.
"This will probably result in us finding alternatives and not using the Royal Mail at all."
Councillor Rob Nolan, Cornwall Council member for Boscawen, said: "The proposed reduction of services at Newham is very worrying, and another blow to local businesses who need to use postal services, but aren't able to walk into the town centre."
Royal Mail centre staff said official comment had to come from their press office. The press office failed to respond to e-mails and telephone calls.

Or:
glues red sod

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.
