Shrewsbury Mail Centre Set For Closure

Looks like Royal Mail have given Shrewsbury Mail Centre the last rights,The mail centre has been under review of closure for the last 6months,and today Royal Mail,briefed staff on its preferred option,which is to close the mail centre and send SY mail to CHESTER,TF mail to WOLVERHAMPTON and LD mail to CARDIFF, although safegarding 50.5 network jobs which would be based at Shrewsbury.
Now the fight begins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chester is at least 1hr 30 mins away via public transport or 1hr 15 -30mins travelling by car depending on time of day, then £70pw out of your net pay for petrol (after 3 quick years). Are they really putting this as 'reasonable flexibility'? How may other mailcentre reviews have come under such extreme travel options with their reviews? and what has been Royal Mails worse case 'flexibility' alternative.? Ive read that most who have chosen to travel even 30miles have left the business once the travel payments have stopped due to the time and finacial stresses involved..

Never mind public transport, we might soon be hearing again "It is understood Royal Mail is talking to unions about asking staff to take vans home with them overnight to save travel costs."

I only hope that all 140ish staff say they wish to stay with the company so Royal Mail have to prove they can accomodate all staff before they unplug any machines as their beloved 2010 agreement states, which they so dearly love!!! Lets make sure they have to stick to the small print.

Was just thinking of whats on offer on the outside world after mailcentres have closed for staff now the Richboys are in charge...Labour sold Royal Mail down the river when they signed us up to Europe and they said no Government can have a monopoly business.......So along came DSA...i agree.

With the space vacated by the Mail Centre closure might they move into Shrewsbury work from Minsterley SPDO, Pontesbury SPDO, Condover SPDO, Cressage SPDO, Westbury SPDO, Wem Delivery Office, Church Stretton Delivery Office, Ellesmere Delivery Office, Oswestry Delivery Office, Welshpool Delivery Office, Whitchurch Delivery Office and Craven Arms Delivery Office, all of which might be considered for closure given their proximity to Shrewsbury, all twelve of them being within about twenty miles or half a hours drive ?

Shrewsbury MC, has been given the "definitive" thumbs down by the so called review team. They also stated that the journey to Chester MC (over 1 hour away) was considered to be within the bounds of being "reasonably flexible" for the SY work force.

That's a very good question, but they won't have time to answer you here because they're far too busy driving very long distances to and fro new mail centres.

In London as a result of an yes vote we got Royal Mail to agree that a reasonable journey time was for full time staff 1 hour by public transport from home address to new work location. For part timers it was double their current journey time up to a cap of an hour.

Of course this was a default postion, many people choose to travel further then that distance to get to their perfered location on a voluntary basis and many more opt to drive as it normally qualifies an indivdual for more excess fares.

However the hour agreement prevents anyone being sent to an office further than that by public transport and has worked well given the fact that the London Mail Centre closure programme involved 3000 people.
