Re: P&L 1 year on.
Know how you feel. I always start on time. Used to love this job before P&L, now i cant stand it.
On a different note. This must be the only company that gives you a job, then spends so much time/effort/money trying to get rid of you. The workforce is the biggest asset a company has, yet we get treated like dirt even on a good day!!!!!!!!

Is 2.30pm your contracted finishing time? If you arfe staying out pissing about, you can be sure that someone will get caught and maybe lose their job.anTi wrote:
You come in on time, you take your meal relief, you use the trolley, you do your flats last, you don't go back before 2.30pm! No one likes working till that time but we realise that we must make it cost the business so much money that they have to take action. It is costing MASSIVE amounts every week.
Why are you expecting to finish early? If you're getting paid 39 hours you should be working 39 hours. No incentive, no real possibility of finishing early. The crazy thing is the only incentive there is now is the incentive not to do it.

You can only be working 39 hours if RM provide sufficient work for you during those hours. If they do not, then they cannot complain about you finishing early, and certainly cannot claw back that time on a future day.

If you are getting paid 39 hours then you should be expecting to be in work for 39 hours. Whether that is doing kill off's, out on delivery or watching paint dry.Lincox wrote:You can only be working 39 hours if RM provide sufficient work for you during those hours. That's very true Pat,the idea that it's Royal Mail's responsibility to provide you with work is a sound idea but the idea that you have the right to go home early if they don't is not.Patrick Clifton wrote:If you are getting paid 39 hours then you should be expecting to be in work for 39 hours. It might be a pointless waste for both parties but if they want you to sit at your frame until finishing time they can do that.

Re: P&L 1 year on.
Wonder why it keeps getting put off? Maybe because they are really pushing the revisions through and more and more are showing up problems. P&L is not a good system.kitkatchunky wrote:Our,office p&l keeps getting put off was going to start in sept not any more :-)

It relies too heavily on be able to 1. Balance the Loops and 2. Have OPGs on the same P&L with similar work rate.wookie wrote:P&L is not a good system.
Any fluctuations in traffic between the loops and you get inefficiency and if 1. and 2. are not met ... the same.
Or am I missing something?

Re: P&L 1 year on.
It's definitely the doubling of inefficiency that has taken management by surprise.Budfrog wrote:It relies too heavily on be able to 1. Balance the Loops and 2. Have OPGs on the same P&L with similar work rate.wookie wrote:P&L is not a good system.

Why it would take anybody by surprise is the only real surprise,it's pretty obvious if two people are stuck in traffic for five minutes that's 10 minutes lost or if one person is waiting 5 minutes on the other that's 10 minutes down on delivery time etc, etc.
Balancing the loops is almost impossible with attendance calls,D2D and just pure luck all involved and then you have factor in different "performance levels" and changing partners it becomes clear that this is a system that will only really work efficiently on paper.

So obvious that you've got it wrong. It's 5 minutes down.fishtank wrote:Why it would take anybody by surprise is the only real surprise,it's pretty obvious ... if one person is waiting 5 minutes on the other that's 10 minutes down on delivery time etc, etc.

Re: P&L 1 year on.
P&L is simply a doubling of the issues that already existed with unequal walks before revisions, so of course a change of delivery methods instigated from on high and executed by planners who are clueless bears no relation to reality on the ground.Budfrog wrote:It relies too heavily on be able to 1. Re: P&L 1 year on.
The smaller the loops, the less inefficiency.
Given the removal of packet duties/driving duties, those inefficiencies should easily have been absorbed by the greater savings. But:
Planners who couldn't make it as managers.
Revision tools nobody appears to understand.
An unrealistic savings agenda.
RMs bullying culture meaning only the worst managers remain and the ones least likely to admit to problems in their DO/area/region.
The fact the emperor really has got no clothes .....you would have thought with the bonuses they award themselves, someone could have at least bought him a loin cloth?

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

If you are waiting 5 mins on your partner that's 10 minutes lost on a fixed amount of workload,5 minutes for whatever reason held your partner up which may or may not be inefficiency and 5 minutes for you waiting around which definitely is inefficiency.

Re: P&L 1 year on.
The inefficiency also becomes less glaring the lighter the mail is. The heavier days really highlight the inefficiency, as there is quite often a glaring disparity between the workload of driver and walker. This is not necessarily true over the entirety of the walk(s), but if there is two to five minutes difference, fluctuating either way, in each loop - even though the workloads might be exactly the same overall - you nevertheless stand to lose as much as an hour from delivery time just from standing around twiddling one's thumbs (if there are twenty loops over two walks and you're waiting three minutes a time for either the other or yourself, then you lose half an hour. I know from experience the difference can be ten minutes). I disagree with fishtank that inefficiency is doubled. The problem is that inefficiency accumulates over the course of the day among each of you, and one person's foibles, errors, stumbles, hurdles, obstacles, attendance calls, have a direct effect on the other person. Now, you could argue that the individual who finishes first could go and help the other person out, but this is not how the job was designed, and even that it highly impractical when you don't know where they are, don't know the loops, etc. It can be done, but I don't know why we should paper over the cracks of poor planning.
Of course, the greater problems are there for all to see. The walks are too big. The workload is dependent on traffic. And it's simply too difficult to fill every contracted minute with work in an environment that is completely unpredictable (Royal Mail's traffic projections only serve to prove this).
