A DAD found himself having to deliver his daughter in a layby outside a Royal Mail sorting office.
Sean Kirk was driving his heavily pregnant wife, Learose, to hospital when they realised baby Adele Cara was not going to wait any longer.
The couple already have three other children and, luckily, had been watching a TV programme about midwives just minutes before they were caught up in their own real-life drama.
Sean also works in the emergency services and has plenty of experience dealing with dramas.
The father-to-be was driving his pregnant wife the eight miles to Southmead Hospital when she realised their new baby was coming and they had to stop the car.
He pulled into a layby off the A38 near the Royal Mail sorting office and Filton College to deliver Adele himself before continuing on with the drive to Southmead for mum and baby to be checked over by medics.
There was no time for the couple to call for help from the ambulance or hospital because the latest addition to the family arrived in such a rush.
Baby Adele arrived two days early on August 9, weighing a very healthy 6lb and 12oz.
Proud dad Sean is thrilled that he was able to help his wife give birth but says he has no plans to become a midwife on a full-time basis.
The shock of dealing with one unexpected birth was more than enough experience. The proud mum has now fully recovered from the shock arrival and both back at the family home and are showing no signs of being harmed by the dramatic arrival.
Mrs Kirk said: “It was all rather shocking, Sean was driving rather fast because he was trying to get me to hospital in time when it suddenly dawned on me that I was going to have the baby where we were.
“We were nearly at the hospital when I told Sean, ‘it’s coming, it’s coming’.
“We pulled up and by the time Sean had run to the other side of the car where I was sitting in the passenger seat, the baby’s head was coming out.”
Mrs Kirk added: “There was no time to find the phone or anything.
“We had just watched Midwives on television and luckily nothing serious happened.
“It was just a really strange scenario.”
Mr Kirk, who is 35, said: “Midwife programmes had been on in the house coming up to the labour and I was at the births of our three older children as well so I knew roughly what happened.
“It was just a stroke of luck that the baby was not breech or stuck or she was not breathing or something.”
Adele is the couple’s fourth child, after Aiden, five, Annabelle, three, and Aliyah, 19 months.
“Mr Kirk said: “With the other babies it took maybe 12 hours of labour but this happened within the space of 20 minutes and I was not expecting that at all. I thought I was in for the long haul.
“I had hoped that as we were only ten minutes away we would make it to the hospital but Learose said the baby was coming and I had a look and I could see the head.
“It was all quite surreal really.”
Mrs Kirk, 30, said: “We were very relieved when she started crying.”
Mr Kirk said he knocked on the delivery suite window at Southmead and initially the team thought his wife was about to give birth.
But when they realised the baby had already arrived, Mr Kirk was able to cut the cord as well.
“They said, ‘you’ve done everything else you might as well cut the umbilical cord,” he said.
Mrs Kirk said: “Sean had to point out to me where Adele was delivered when we were on the way home from the hospital because I had been in so much pain.
“He is so smitten by Adele and I think he does feel more of a special bond because he delivered her.
“His friends are now calling him midwife too.”

I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

"The couple had been watching a TV programme about midwives just minutes before they were caught up in their own real-life drama." and if they had set off for the hospital a bit earlier instead of waiting to watching a TV programme about midwives they wouldn't have had their own real-life drama and got their names in the paper.
