handling cash, balancing the books, sending cash off to Rev Pro, taking verbal abuse off customers without reacting, managers refusing to deal with problems etc etc etcsomerset wrote:I can't quite get my head round this topic .In our office when a resign happens all the duties are listed.The list is handed around on seniority . Callers office included. You don't have to be a rocket scientist with 20 A levels to work in there .Only involves scanning the specials and handing them to each duty and getting a packet for some member of the public. Or collecting a surcharge .

Re: Callers Office Job Not Being Done On Seniority
Somerset says it all really, probably 10 specials a day, 6 postmen and a half dozen packets on the shelf - now who wouldn't be fighting for the chance. Now if you're in an office with 150 deliveries, 350 specials a day, 200 tracked a day and the callers office - which wouldn't be possible of course - you'd be dead!Stormproof wrote:handling cash, balancing the books, sending cash off to Rev Pro, taking verbal abuse off customers without reacting, managers refusing to deal with problems etc etc etcsomerset wrote:I can't quite get my head round this topic .In our office when a resign happens all the duties are listed.The list is handed around on seniority . Re: Callers Office Job Not Being Done On Seniority
its all covered in the way forward agreement:
15.6 The specific jobs that require specialist skills and which will be subject to selection are:
Resourcing Unit (Bookroom);
DOM Support;
Traffic Office;
Enquiry/Callers’ Office;
Major Customer Collection drivers
(to be jointly defined at National level):
Benefits Agency/Customer Mailroom;
Travelling Post Office;
Leadership roles (formerly PHG ‘A’);
Heavy Goods Vehicle Driving (HGV);
Postbus (PSV);
VCS/MAA;
IMP/MTT;
Advanced TPM;
Non-school training
15.8 Employees who are regarded as suitable should be dedicated to these duties for a minimum of 12 months. If after 12 months the employee wishes to change jobs, they must give adequate notice to enable a suitable trained replacement to be found before release can be allowed. The replacement must be available to take up post no later than six months after notice has been given.
The process for resourcing specialist posts will be one of four options, in the following order, unless agreed locally to change this order:
• Deployment of existing surplus employees with the appropriate skills;
• Internal advertisement of the job within the resourcing area itself;
• The acceptance of an existing employee with the appropriate skills from another resourcing area who has previously had his/her name placed on the transfer list for that resourcing area;
• External advertisement.
15.10 Where a post is advertised internally then it will be advertised to all employees in that resourcing area, full- and part-time. Candidates will undergo an objective selection procedure, designed to assess individual competences against the skills required for a particular job. Where more than one candidate possesses the required capabilities, selection will then be on the basis of seniority.

You forgot the 200/300 PO BOX items/mail you have to sort out(somehow) for collection each day/morning!
You forgot the hundreds of people who come into our callers office at least who want specials.recorded,international,packets..etc sent all over the UK and indeed the world!
Each day we have to go through our office looking for packets/letters/specials,etc...which have not been collected within the time frame allowed...all need killing off and bagging up....specials/recorded items in our office at least goes into an account book so we can trace them if a customer shows up...which they do asking where it was returned to etc!
You forgot the firms/local businesses who have their mail/packets/specials etc sorted and ready for collection each morning via several couriers who come in at varying times.......!
Council nowadays all have their mail/packets/specials collected by one of their own staff members each day....again..we are talking about hundreds of items!
And who do you thinks does all the paperwork for surcharged items...which arrive in their hundreds each day to our office!
And what about answering the phone calls(dozens) from 6.00am until 6.00pm everyday wondering why the postie didn't knock when they put a P739 card through their box!
And then serving customers who come in saying...erm expecting a packet..where is it?Have you got a P739 card sir?NO!..Do you know if it's a special, recorded, International, tracked,packet,letter,etc....Customer says no...right this might take a while to find...!
Taking the PO Box mail you've sorted and prepped and taking many of these items to various walks (two offices) for the posties to deliver!
Then also sending packets/changing money for the coffee machine for managers and posties alike!
Customers who come in with dozens of packets who want them sending via recorded delivery..you weigh them,fill out the orange labels,stick them on,price them all up on the til...then he customers says do you accept credit cards
Often we have days when there is only one staff member doing box counter services (Mondays a good example)..managers know staff should not be on their own..we have four managers at the moment...they always say give them a shout when you get 'busy' and need help....which i do now and again...strange how managers (ours) seldom help!
Oh and don't forget everything has to be labeled up,dated,and put into the correct place ready for collection....half the time you can't fooking read what the postie has wrote on their P739 cards too..lol...yes i used to think working in box counter was easy..until i did it....there are three/four of us reserves who should/could do this type of work........hardly any of them work in box counter(unless they get SA for it of course)...one even admitted to me he was scared to face the public...and handling money..lol...anyone who wants to work in box counter had better spend a day doing it before deciding whether it's for them or not....as when i do it...i personally find it physically and mentally more demanding than driving a van or walking the streets and it can be a bit stressful at times..especially when you are on your own and there are people queuing outside the office..and not a manager in sight to give you a hand..as promised!

Caller's Office can be hell or a piece of piss depending on the size of the office and how it's resourced.
It's a bit pointless to generalise.

If someone has a condition recognised as a disability under the Equality Act then if necessary the business has to make reasonable adjustments to allow them to continue in employment.curleytop wrote:Mandelson Wrote :Unless dda issues. How does this alter procedure ?(excuse my ignorance)
If a duty or a modified duty is identified for them, that duty is ringfenced for them regardless of seniority.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Re: Callers Office Job Not Being Done On Seniority
Somerset.....good point mate....i believe that our 'callers' office is one of a handful that offer virtually everything Post office counters offer in terms of sending mail/packets with the exception we do not offer surface mail/international signed services....some days in our office it's just bonkers....customer often tell us that the massive Post office in town which is up the road from where we are (and has at least 20 people serving customers at the same time) isn't a popular choice of theirs due to the fact they have to wait longer and staff aren't as good as us..
(their words not mine)...best part about this is that recently the management have said they want at least a 100 hundred hours from this office.. i mean we are down to the bare minimum now...madness

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
