Man jailed over theft from postboxes

A THIEF has been jailed after he pleaded guilty to stealing mail from four postboxes in Bolton.

Antony Burrough, aged 30, was jailed for 13 months at Bolton Magistrates’ Court yesterday after admitting three counts of theft.

The court heard how Burrough had broken into four post boxes in Breightmet and Tonge Fold on three occasions between January, 2012 and July, 2012 and stolen post.

In sentencing him, chairman of the bench Elaine Wisedale said: “Any theft is unacceptable but theft from the Royal Mail is a despicable act against the general public.”

Burrough, of Cateaton Street, Bury, took some of the mail back to his mother’s home and was arrested after she contacted the police.

He is known to have taken two DVDs and at least £20 cash from inside a card, but the exact amount stolen is not known.

Prosecuting Robin Lynch told the court Burrough used tools to get inside the post boxes.

He said: “He seems to have been targeting things that could have money, cheques or postal orders in.

“He had made attempts to change two cheques to his own name. They were crude attempts.”

The court was told Royal Mail had a duty to reunite owners with post and had sent apology letters out to a number of people.

They had also changed the locks on the post boxes at a cost of £150 each.

Burrough, who has 21 previous convictions for 46 offences, including 23 thefts, committed the crimes while subject to a suspended sentence for breaching a restraining order.

Royal Mail spokesperson, Morag Turnbull said: "Royal Mail takes the security of the mail seriously and it is a criminal offence to tamper with or delay the delivery of mail and we welcome the sentence handed down in this case.”
