Hmm, now then, there’s a thing. Apparently, according to Mobile Today, the Royal Mail is looking at setting up their very own mobile network. What they’re allegedly looking at setting up is a virtual network, or in other words, one that doesn’t have its own phone masts, instead riding on the signal of one of the big networks. Y’know, in the same way that Virgin Mobile rides on the T-Mobile signal (and since the merger, the Orange signal, too).
It seems like the Royal Mail is at the stage where they’ve sent out requests for info from the networks, so it’s far from being a done deal, yet, but if a deal does go ahead, then we could see mobile phones with the Royal Mail badge on, a concept that deeply amuses me…
Y’see, the thing that immediately popped into my mind, and made me chuckle most heartily, was the idea of a text message having to have a stamp on it. Extending that logic further, it’d also take a few days for the text to arrive (even longer round christmas, but then, round chrimbo, that happens with normal texts, anyway), and you’ll turn your phone on one day, to see a note slipped inside the battery case apologising for the fact your phone was turned off when they tried to deliver it.
And then you have to go to the post office to pick the text up…
All joking aside, though, this does sound like a logical place for the Royal Mail to expand to next, and with post offices all over the country, they have a staggeringly huge number of retail outlets. The only question in my mind, if this all does go ahead, is what phones they’ll be offering; will they offer superphones like the Samsung Galaxy S3, or will they stick exclusively to budget phones?
Either way, it’ll definitely be intriguing to see how this one plays out…

Does this mean every postire will finally be issued with a RM mobile for work related matters, including the success or otherwise of Specials (for non-PDA rounds), rather than using our own mobiles?

It is a communication business after all. Poste Italiane offer it in Italy as do La Poste in France.

I think we should be telling them that we will not pay if we go over our free calltime allowance - see how THEY like it :)

Remember National Girobank too, until Thatcher sold that off.
