A mystery well-wisher has draped a postbox with Union flags and tied on a giant medal in honour of city Olympic star Tom Daley.

The anonymous gesture was spotted yesterday morning near 18-year-old diving ace Tom’s family home.

Eggbuckland Post Office

Nearby resident Nick Medlin stumbled across the decorated postbox on his way past Eggbuckland Post Office.

The artistic display sprang up as The Herald continues to back a campaign to see Royal Mail honour both bronze medal-winning Tom and his Plymouth College school pal Ruta Meilutyte.

Ruta stunned the swimming world at London 2012 by steaming to a gold medal in the women’s 100m breaststroke – aged just 15.

Royal Mail has painted postboxes gold in the hometowns of Team GB athletes who triumphed at the Games.

But strict postal bosses say Ruta does not qualify because she represented her birth country of Lithuania. And no exception will be made for Tom, whose emotional third place finish came despite a year of personal tragedy.

Local Communication Workers Union boss Chris Webb has written to Royal Mail top brass asking for permission to paint a box in the pair’s honour. Despite Mr Webb securing funding and manpower for the project, Royal Mail is yet to respond.

... thought they would have picked up post box and chucked it in the nearest river from a great height (10 metres ?) - with a two-and-a-half twist naturally
