It's about time Royal Mail stood up to militant offices and showed them that wildcat striking and poor service will result in the closure of that office. I won't lie, I am a Royal Mail Manager at a mail centre and we are constantly having to clear up the debris from the last strike at Oxford Mail Centre. Why should other more efficient Mail Centre have to bail out poor performing ones like Oxford. It's down to Bob Cullen that OX is in such a mess and perhaps he now has the wake up call that he deserves. If you don't like what I'm saying then read the comments from members of the public in the link on the message above and see their views. They are delighted that Cowley is closing and looking forward to an "improved service". This is amazing considering in nearly all other areas the public would support their postal workers.
I know this website is for CWU activists, and you won't like what I'm writing, but this is the reality of the situation that we are in and only the strongest will survive.
I just hope the CWU are aware of this !!

Hey, I'm not here to provocate just to air my views .......... that surely I am entitled to ??
It was purely a matter of time until something major had to be done to Oxford and now it has. I'm just prompting thoughts about other militant Mail Centres/DO's who constantly take unofficial IA and the possible end result. Where I work, and around the whole of East Anglia, we have 99% who are really good offices and the 1% hardcore who are constantly causing trouble. It's, therefore, easier to remove the 1% and absorb the work between the other 99% and completely remove the areas where the issues lie.
Harsh but probably true.

K66YLA,
If the pension issue did affect us managers in the long run then, yes, you would see strong opposition to it. At the end of the day CMA represented grades are strongly affected by these issues too. Remember, we get the same % pay rise as you and also DOM's will be forced to change their start times to reallign with staff start times. Likewise the pension issue involves EVERYONE in the business and, therefore, if necessary we do need to support each other. We just need to do it the correct way without further damaging our already fragile business.

It's called bad management if they treat staff a lot better in that office then there wouldn't be any trouble would there and yeah can see your point about the pensions affecting us all but removing that office isn't gonna solve the probs we have with RM does it and besides there are enough closures anyway

Well the 1% will become the next in line - you know the old saying:

Big fleas have little fleas upon their backs to bite 'em
And little fleas have littler fleas and so ad infinitum

The "issues" as you put it are the issues that confront us all. It is how we face those issues that according to you create the 1% and according to me make a man or woman of principle and substance.

You see it is really a question of perspective. Your perspective is that you will do whatever you're told and mine only what I am paid to do.

Mobster thanks for coming on and revealing yourself.
Of course you are entitled to air your views and i for one am interested in them even if i think that some of them are wrong.
You mention certain offices being militant and unofficial IA,unofficial IA is always the last resort for even the hardliners, does it not make you wonder then why hit happens?
Some of the stories i've read on here and issues at my own DO warrant it without a doubt!

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

But why are the offices that are having IR difficulties classed as hardcore CWU, there are 2 sides to every argument and don't the local management have to take some degree of responsibility for its closure. IMO if an office is managed well, and the staff, well motivated and encouraged, they work hard and hardcore Unionists have a problem influencing people.

However, if the are poorly led, and if there is a perceived atmosphere of bullying and harrasment then its a breeding ground for "hardcore" unionists.

An example:

"Mick we are really shafted we need you to work over at the LSM, can you do that" 85% of the time the answer would be "Sure boss, I'll get over there now" and off trots Mick because he has had an explanation and has been approached in a friendly way.

"Mick, get over to the LSM now" - Mick says "Why !" (because he did not like the approach) - Mangers says "Because I told you to" (He is upset because of the way Mick spoke back). Mick does go over but he is so hacked off he takes 10 minutes getting his kit together or getting a snack/coffee or going for a comfort break and his productivity is lower because he is not concentrating on the work but keeps going over in his mind how he thinks he has been badly treated. He also goes over to his rep to tell him about the perceived bullying episode.

A simplistic example but which approach causes less stress between management and workers, and therefore helps keep the office working properly and efficiently, and which one helps keep employees on the managers side.

Well it appears as though your union the CMA don't like it and intend to ballot members if Royal Mail don't move on the present offer.

Actually the Pension issue does not involve everyone, apparently Senior Royal Management are not in the same plan and will not be affected by any changes. So much for "our people"

Royal Mail pay me to manage my office as I see fit. I do not have my boss breathing down my neck telling me what to do. However, some of the things that I am paid to do will not be very popular amongst my team. For example, we have to achieve a business plan each year of around 5%. Therefore, my team will undoubtably need to work "smarter" or, if they are unable to improve efficiency, thay will need to absorb work onto their duties. Implementing these plans is hard and unpopular work but I do it because it's what the company pay me for. Just like they pay you for the "final mile" of deivery ........ the most important part of the whole process.
I don't see a problem in Royal Mail losing jobs if the people who wish to leave are paid via our very fair VR policy and are shown out of the business with the respect they deserve. Likewise the CWU should be looking after the members they have left. I cannot comprehend the CWU stance on refusal to close the pension scheme to new employees. Surely we must look after our current staff and let new staff join under the revised terms. (If they don't accept the terms then they can find another employer who can offer a better pension scheme)
Not all managers are bad and against the CWU, in fact some CWU reps I've dealt with have been the most honest and decent in the whole company. I just hope the more militant reps understand the damage they are causing the business and, long term, the damage they may inflict on their own units.

That's fairer than most , however during that long strike , the CWU had to go to the very top of the Royal Mail tree because local management simply didn't have the authority to deal with the situation that had been badly handled, and it was obvious the orders were coming from a very hostile Senior Mgt . Most businesses have rejected the top down system, the present system is just a Corporate version of the 70's RM management control system. Many better non-ops managers were quite happy to take the money and go to the competition. The other irony is the CMA's leadership is quite left wing and is scathingly critical of L&C and their arrogance .

Those windows you can see in the photo are entrance hall and reception. Actual workplace ( mail centre ) building has no windows what so ever.
