CWU says stamps should celebrate all

Following the revelation that Royal Mail will not be producing next-day stamps for gold medal winning Paralympics athletes, the Communication Workers Union is today urging Royal Mail to continue its amazing achievements in celebrating the success of Olympic gold medal winners by treating Paralympians the same.

Dave Ward, CWU deputy general secretary, said: "Royal Mail has done a fantastic job in celebrating the successes of Team GB through the next-day stamps and overnight gold post boxes. These efforts have caught the imagination of the public and helped to extend the excitement and celebration of the 2012 Games beyond London.

"We believe that the same treatment should be given to our Paralympic athletes.

"CWU is aware there are some potential logistical problems with producing next day stamps for the expected volume of gold medals in the Paralympics. However, if we work together in the spirit of the Olympics we think there should be a way of overcoming these issues and finding a way to celebrate the achievements of our Paralympic athletes in equality with our able bodies Olympians.

"Paralympians have overcome incredible injuries and disabilities in order to compete at the highest level of sport. There must be efforts that Royal Mail, with the support of its workers, can pursue to bring next-day stamps to celebrate their achievements."

Our working conditions continue to fall through the floor, and that's all that occupies Dave's mind.
The CWU isn't fit for purpose.

I thought the trade union movement was about something bigger than "Why are we lapsing on Monday?"
Social inclusivity is something I would want my trade union leaders to be focussing on.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Well i would imagine this statement took maybe 30 minutes to draft so it's hardly drawing valuable resources away from other areas.

So Dave might do about fifteen such statements a day, maybe 3500 a year :Very Happy Not much evidence of that.
Seriously though, the Royal Mail is well representing the Paralympics on their postage stamps, a total of 21 different ones in all :
:Applause 2 'Special definitives' - the widely used little stamps, half of both the First Class and overseas rate ones bearing the London 2012 Paralympic, not London 2012 Olympic, logo,
:Applause 9 of the special 30 First Class stamps issued in 2009, 2010 and 2011 featured Paralympic sports - archery, boccia, ecquestrian, goalball, rowing, table tennis, sailing, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair tennis,
:Applause 4 stamps to be issued tomorrow I think for 'welcoming' the Paralympic Games, and
:Applause 6 stamps to feature the Paralympic gold medal winners.
Total 21 different Paralympic stamps from Royal Mail :Very Happy

Look at it this way people, commemorative stamps will sell and that means more money for the business, what's good for the business is good for the people that work in it.

None of that matters, all people will remember is that the able bodied athletes got a stamp each.......and our disabled athletes didn't.
It's an unecessary public relations own goal for the sake of a difference of around a dozen stamps, you can put as many fake :Applause on it as you like LL..it doesn't change that.
There was no reasonable logistical reason not to give them their own stamps,no moral reason,no reasonable cost reason..it was just RM at their best...not thinking things through.

Surely it's not "for the sake of a difference of around a dozen stamps", probably three or four times that number.
As has rightly been pointed out "commemorative stamps will sell and that means more money for the business" but they will only sell, firstly, if punters are going to buy them, and nobody can seriously suggest that there will be the same interest in the Paralympics as there was in the Olympics, and, secondly, if Royal Mail stamp issuing policy maintains credibility and it is already perilously close to losing that already, yet more 'special' stamps resulting in yet more philatelists abandoning British stamps and so definately not more money for the business, and I'm sure in this instance Royal Mail have thought things through. :Very Happy

I think rm are always scoring own goals like this.
technology means very little design costs look how fast they knocked the last lot out. 12 hours ?
print the stamps they will sell

like the whole thing about whether to paint a box gold in the place an athlete grew up all his life ...or where he happens to lives now! etc.

paint them both as its just a pot of paint so why rm sets itself up for criticism all the time.

ps if i had a little more communication from the cwu
i wouldn't mind them making apt social comment .
