ELSENHAM’S post box is to be painted gold in honour of Olympian Ben Maher after locals persuaded Royal Mail it should be in the village instead of in Bishop’s Stortford.

The village’s postman reportedly urged his employers to make the switch after it was announced this morning (Tuesday, August 7) that the post box outside Stortford’s main branch in South Street was to be transformed in honour of the gold medal-winning show jumper.

Royal Mail’s Tim Cowen told the Observer: “As the nation’s second biggest employer, we have people with lots of local knowledge and if Ben’s regarded as local to Elsenham rather than Bishop’s Stortford than that’s where it’s going.”

The box post outside the village branch in Robin Hood Road is expected to be completed by 2pm.

Upon hearing the good news, Elsenham parish council chairman Nick Edwards Tweeted that he welcomed Royal Mail’s decision to change the location.

Stortford-born Ben, who trains at Elsenham stud, claimed victory over Holland yesterday (Monday, August 6) in the team event.

He also features on a commemorative stamp celebrating Team GB’s achievements at the London 2012 Games.

The unique souvenir will be available by lunchtime today at 500 selected post office branches across the UK.
