Anger at closure of Post Office closures on Teesside

POST office users across Teesside are struggling to find services due to “temporary” closures lasting years.

A total of five post offices in our area have been “temporarily closed” - leaving residents without a vital service on their doorstop.

A Freedom of Information request has uncovered a string of branches shut for more than a year where no replacement provided.

The Post Office has blamed a failure to find suitable premises and a shortfall in people offering to man services, but the Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) said that the Post Office’s business model is at fault.

On Teesside, the branches that have been closed and are still to reopen are:

:: Roseberry Square, Redcar, which closed in 2007;

:: Eaglescliffe Post Office, which closed in 2008;

:: Stainton Post Office, Middlesbrough, which closed in 2010;

:: Grange Avenue Post Office, Stockton, which closed in January last year;

:: Victoria Street Post Office, South Bank, which closed in March last year.

The closures of these post offices attracted anger from locals at the time.

Eaglescliffe lost its service three years ago with the closure of Martin’s Newsagents, in Durham Lane. Campaigners said the elderly in the area were likely to be hardest hit.

Residents now have to travel to Ingleby Barwick, Yarm or Hartburn.

The “temporary” closure of the Roseberry branch in Roseberry Square, Redcar has also caused problems.

Residents, and Redcar Liberal Democrat MP Ian Swales have long campaigned for a new post office at shopping precinct.
