Apparently one way around the "limited to £500" at Halfords is to order a bike to the value of £500, take it back the next day and tell them you cant get on with it, they cant refund you the £500 and so will give a credit note to the tune of £500 with which you simply add your own cash to it if you want a bike over the value of £500. Thats a trick thats been done by one guy in our office!

I didnt want any of the bikes Halfords had to offer and went to Leisure Lakes and bought a Specialized Sirrus Comp for a few quid over the £500 (added my own cash).
And I'll do the same next year when I'm eligable for another bike!

This one http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... 65534#tab3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
is over the maximum RM will lend you, but it looks like there is a deal available,
Web Exclusive - Spend & Save on ALL Bikes and Bike Accessories - Spend £250 Save £20, Spend £400 Save £40, Spend £700 Save £70 - Must End Wednesday
that will still leave you around a tenner above the budget, but if u have your letter of collection, try your luck and walk into the store and explain your situation,
they will try and fob u off with another bike, but stick to your guns and insist that is the bike u want,
Halfords have about 3 of their own brands which they stock, which they would make more profit from, if you decide on the Boardman, don't let them sway u,
I have the Boardman Mountain bike, its a great bike, but i would have preferred the hybrid (wasn't available to me at the time).

If they refuse to accept the voucher, keep an eye on the website, check it every day, you will find they regularly offer 10% (or more) off on certain bikes,
my mountain bike was retailing at £550, i waited and got it for £465 (give or take a couple of quid).

It also depends if you want to buy a lock and helmet etc with your maximum amount.

I applied for my loc on Saturday. I didn't look to see that you can't top it up a bit yourself. I don't think I'll be bothering with this as there isn't anything I want for less than £500. I really has my heart set in the Boardman hybrid. Never mind.

cycle to work scheme

I understand that under the royal mail scheme that the limit is £500, fair enough, but is it also just limited to getting your bike from halfords?

however,do they offer reduced bikes to the scheme?
They will pay halfords 10%
So the voucher is worth £450 to them
so on a bike already reduced to £500......

From my experience - yes.

My local branch of Halfords are a dead loss. Been waiting over two weeks for the bike ive ordered to arrive in store. Can i use Leisure Lakes through mail order?
