Valley residents have emailed the Holmfirth website this week worried about changes to deliveries announced by Holmfirth Post Office.
Steve McGuiness, Royal Mail Delivery Sector Manager for the Holmfirth area, told Holmfirthweb.com: “Our postmen and women play a vital role in the Holmfirth area, and we need to modernise the way we operate in order to maintain services and keep prices as low as possible”
“The way in which we communicate with each other has changed dramatically. Unfortunately fewer letters are now posted every day and we need to organise our delivery routes to be as efficient as possible.
“We also deliver more larger items so we are investing in new equipment to carry these items to you even more securely.
What this means?
Speaking in an open letter to the Holme Valley, Mr McGuiness said they would continue to deliver in the morning and for a longer period during the day. Many customers will continue to get their mail by lunchtime.
“The time you receive your mail will depend on where you are on the new delivery route. This may be later or possibly earlier than you are used to.
“These changes may mean a different postman or woman from your local office will delivery to you.”
Local readers expressed concern in emails to Holmfirthweb.com this week.
“Things had only just settled down following various ups and downs along our route (Hepworth) and it seems more changes are proposed which I feel sure will mean a worse service for local residents,” said one householder who asked to remain anonymous.
An email from G Wiggans, who described themselves as a “Holmfirther” said he ran a business form home and relied on a prompt and regular post service to be able to work effectively.
Another resident, Sharon C, said: “Because the post is delivered later in the morning, we no longer see the mail until we get home from work, which means it is effectively another day late. It was much better a few years ago when we used to receive an early morning delivery, along with the milk.”
Another email from a “S.W” praised the dedication of local postman and woman. “You should not blame them for the changes, they really do the best they can, providing a service through deep snow and during the recent severe showers and flooding. The insurance man nearly refused to wade through our floods but the postman didn’t bat an eyelid.”
