Royal Mail has printed a stamp to commemorate Heather Stanning and Helen Glover winning Team GB’s first gold medal of the London 2012 Games.

Royal Mail is in the process of printing a stamp to commemorate Team GB’s first gold medal of the Olympic Games. The stamp will be available within 24 hours of Team GB rowers Heather Stanning and Helen Glover taking gold in the women’s coxless pair race this afternoon.

Royal Mail will be printing a stamp for every gold medal that Team GB wins. It will also be painting a post box in the home town of medal winners gold. In the case of Ms Stanning and Ms Glover this will mean by tomorrow morning there will be a gold post box in Penzance, Cornwall and Lossiemouth, Scotland.

Moya Greene, Royal Mail Chief Executive, said: “We’re delighted to be issuing these very special Gold Medal stamps to recognise our Olympic champion UK athletes.

“This is a first for Royal Mail and we are proud to play our part in celebrating the many victories this summer.

“We will be printing millions of stamps to enable customers to celebrate these sporting successes and I’m sure they will be treasured as unique souvenirs of Team GB’s victories for years to come.”

Royal Mail said the stamps will be on sale by lunchtime tomorrow in over 500 Post Offices across the UK, as well as on the Royal Mail website. An additional 4,700 post offices will receive the Gold Medal stamps within a week.
