It's not flexibility,it's not operational needs,it's nothing but a wankey scumbag bumping a colleague off their duty to earn a few quid.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

I am a floater because that's what I prefer. I am happy to let the bloke work his day off 9 times out of 10 provided I am asked nicely by the manager, usually he asks me and trys to find me the best duty possible and everyone is happy.

At my office we have a strong enough union that they won't kick you off your duty that you signed for as a floater just because the regular wants to work his day off. It's your duty on that day and as postman said, it's not operational needs if it happens to you and you are pee'd off about it stick in a grievence and don't listen to their bull because they are not supposed to boot you off your duty without your agreement, if they do then when it comes to your day off ask if you can work and kick the regular guy off his duty, if they won't do it then you have every right to feel harrassed.

Selfish docket grabbers, thats a bit strong.

We've got two off on long term sick in our office, plus holidays to cover, so if we don't want to lapse people have to work a day off, we all have a go at it, everyone is asked if they want to do it, most say yes, some refuse, and we always work our own duties.

Floaters float, end of really.

Does it really matter, after all it's just putting letters through letterboxes.

Very few in my office do afternoon overtime since P/L came in. They are all too knackered. Luckily for them they have the option of coming in for an hours O/T before their duty to do IPS etc. Some work their rest week but they won't get put on their own duty unless the week off cover is off.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

If by way of earning a few extra quid in working my day off makes me a 'Selfish Docket Grabber' then so be it. RM has not asked me to work my day off without due cause, they canot afford to!

Apart from the obvious problems outlined in this thread it does lead to under staffing in delivery offices and does add to the the businesses ability to have a greater reliance on part-time and fixed term contracts.

As a resourcing solution it's a bit of a disaster and given that the overtime rate is lousy and people constantly moan about how difficult the job has become and the effect it has on them physically i'm surprised that anyone other than those who are really struggling financially actually do it.

I would imagine if you really need the money that badly you wouldn't give a f**k what duty you were put on.
The point would be to make money not time.

you're missing the point. it is not your own delivery on your day off

I think the point is that none of the duties belong to anybody, manager can put you anywhere he needs covered.

I think the point is that if we got a decent wage nobody would need to work their day off to make ends meet.

I thought the point was if they really needed the money they wouldn't mind what duty they did or even what office they were in.
I thought the point was - people should be aware of the consequences of their actions.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.
