CONCERNED residents, councillors and businesses gave plans to relocate Bridgwater’s post office to Sainsbury’s a giant thumbs down at a special meeting this afternoon.
The crowd gathered at Bridgwater House in King Square for Sedgemoor District Council’s Community Scrutiny Committee meeting to discuss plans for a permanent post office at The Clink.
Around 20 people listened as issues regarding the plans were brought forward by Sedgemoor District Council to three Post Office representatives.
These included suggestions for an alternative location in Eastover, the perceived dangerous location at The Clink, parking, accessibility for disabled and elderly people and the risk of taking a public service away from the town.
After an hour-and-a-half the council suggested having the post office in Sainsbury’s would be unsuitable in terms of access and would decrease footfall in the town, and voted unanimously against the plans.
Laura Tarling, Post Office stakeholder manager for the South West, said at the meeting: “We are fully committed to providing a permanent service in Bridgwater and will be running a consultation for seven weeks, with leaflets available at the current branch.”
She added that having the branch at Sainsbury’s would increase the post office’s opening hours and benefit shift workers in the town.

Locating Post Offices in pubs is obviously better than in Sainsburys but that tends to be in villages rather than towns.
