The youth section of the CWU are very important as they are the next generation of union leaders. The idea for a YAC came from a processing rep in my branch. He took the idea to the branch commitee who took it on, it then went regional and got the support of the eastern region, it then went to confrence were it was opposed by the leadership but confrence passed a motion for the setting up of a youth advisory commitee.

If the young do not get involved and see the CWU as relevant to them then the CWU will be broken by its own hand.

The youth officer for my branch is also the weekend processing rep and many others involved in the youth section of the CWU hold IR posts as well.

I attended the first ever national youth education event in York and it was very worthwile .

That was then and this is now! Royal Mail once they have instituted the changes will quickly identify the areas where jobs can be saved and there will be no mercy, out goes the MTSF and protection of the conditions - there will be a sweep of the sick, then the troublemakers then the real culling will start. 40,000 may be an exaggeration initially but I don't doubt that will be something like the eventual figure. The union can only fight so many cases of unfair dismissal - it doesn't fight them all now!

What price all the fancy trimmings when you lose 25% of your income, and that is just the tip of the iceberg - if the CWU lose this fight then there is no CWU. Nobody remembers those who came second!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We need a strike now cause we have to protect our hard earned rights that was hard fought and won previously and they two crappers just can't be allowed to get away with it just not on :cfo :lfo faceless cowards

It is all to do with making the union like a friendly society and not a fighting machine. What would they do without our money?

As for pushing the Youth aspect and education - there won't be enough union members left to fill a classroom.

I don't want to sound defeatist but the cards are all stacked in RMs favour. You must have heard the saying for every action there is a reaction, unfortunately in this instance the reaction generally falls short of requirement. By it's nature a reaction is a quickie and is a bit like the little lad sticking his finger in the dyke. As much as I would like to win this battle I don't think it is possible. I am being as honest as I can be. The early starts come in on the 8th and it is downhill from then on. If there is a magic formula to stop that happening we should have applied it by now. Once they come in the rolling days won't make a blind bit of difference, I would predict that the IA will start falling like a pack of cards.
All RM are doing is totally ignoring the CWU, the Workforce and all the agreements and there is nothing illegal about that, and there is nothing the CWU or we can do about it except go out for as long as we can manage.

Had we gone out prior to the Labour party conference then the media would have had something to buttonhole the parliamentary layabouts with.

It's been done before , with the RMT , BR purposefully split track renewal and maintenance to break a organized Union and contracted & sub-contracted to poor firms with a sub-standard service in "non-core " functions . Postcon want Delivery and Processing split . To break the CWU , Crozier wants a cull , pick off "trouble-makers " then get the rest through the door as cheaply as possible , Seasonal Fluctuations can be outsourced . To break COHSE & NUPE , Ridley did competitive tendering for the NHS & Councils , bringing cut throat firms like Carillion & Service Team , he also broke the T&G by deregulating the buses .L &C are of the same era ,they've been spoiling for a fight for a long time ,but it's not in their nature to control their managers hence the own goals scored in 2003 and London/SE & Scotland saving the CWU's hide . L&C and the unelected quango acting as minister without portfolio are merely doing New Lie-bours dirty work for them. Tony Blair used to speak with ambivalent mixed messages with several contradictory agendas due to the contrary part of it's brain . He's basically ambivalent about Public Sector Staff, and is the adoring overgrown public schoolboy gazing adoringly at these big firms. All these people are doing is "reform " and "flexibility " for New Labour . Blair would have liked to have done this before, fearing a back-bench revolt and funding being pulled , but used Air Traffic Control & the Fire Service as his guinea pigs .Brown is just the opposite side of the same coin. In Conclusion, this is how Crozier will get his 45% Polish Workforce . Don't get me wrong, the buses , the railways and the NHS are a absolute joke, Royal Mail will be a disorganized mess , and PFI will cripple this country in debt in the future.
