Transfer Question!

I've been looking for info on Transferring to another office but can't find what i'm looking for. I was mainly wanting to know if you need to have been with Royal Mail for a certain amount of time before you can put in for transferring? And will you only get transferred to the office you want if they have a vacancy going? Also what is the farthest distances away its possible to get transferred? Many thanks for any answers!

Not necessary to be with RM 6 months. I started with Anguard at Xmas, continued into january and was taken on by RM late Jan on usual 3 month/25hr terms. In March I saw a vacancy at the DO near my home and spoke to my DOM about it. He said - 'don't bother applying, I will get you a transfer' and three weeks later it was all arranged. [And I don't think he was even that keen to get rid of me!!!!]

I now take ten minutes by bike to get to work against a 45 minute drive.

Yep thats what i want! Its starting to get depressing how far i have to travel and spend on just to get to a part time job! It would be so much better working in my own town where i know where everything is and i wouldn't get lost all the time!

Must admit I was lucky. But you can make your own luck, by keeping your ears open. It just happened that my home DO had a staffing crisis at just the right time, so a transfer was easy. But deliovering on your home patch is just sooooo much better.

Yeah even though the town i deliver in is probably nicer and safer than my home patch, i just feel i would get along better with the people and deliveries in my own town, you do start to feel like a bit of an outcast when everybody else lives down the road from the office. I guess i'll just have to check the website everyday and see if anything comes up!?

Officially - Yes

Unofficially - No.

Losing DOMs usually have to recruit for the vacant position, or need resources reorganising to cover your old job so they have an interest in delaying it as long as they can,especially if their is a recruitment freeze. Whereas the gaining office has less costs as they won't need to recruit and they have a willing volunteer who both knows the job and the area already, so they will be keen to get you.

The new transfer system means you have to apply direct through the website but the upside is you don't have to tell your manager anything.

I finally got in contact with the office i want to transfer to, and the DOM there said because I've been with Royal Mail less than 12 months i can't get a transfer, otherwise he would take me on tomorrow, he told me to talk to my DOM to see if they were willing to let me go.

DOM's wrong.
The length of service eligibility criteria was only ever 6 months unless your trial period had been extended.

In addition the request was then subject to the individual satisfying the eligibility criteria of completing six months continuous service and having a clear conduct record, whilst also not being on any stage of the attendance procedure

So do you just go to the website and click on the job you want a transfer for and apply for the job just the same as someone who doesn't already work for RM?

No there is a dedicated page for internal transfers.
