A pair of masked raiders armed with a pistol and a knife stole a cash box being delivered to a Leeds post office.
The YEP understands the two men, who were both wearing balaclavas, stormed into Halton Post Office on Cross Green Lane in a terrifying incident just before noon on Wednesday, July 4.
It is understood that a lone security guard was delivering cash to the post office.
Once he was inside, the two men are believed to have entered the post office and threatened him with what police say was a pistol and a knife.
The two robbers then stole a cash box which is believed to have contained a quantity of money.
The security guard is not believed to have been injured during the robbery.
Both the men were then driven away from the scene by a third man in a silver Vauxhall Vectra, which travelled away from the post office in the direction of Selby Road.
The YEP understands the car was then recovered a short time later on Nettleton Court, on the quiet Whitkirk estate, which is around a mile along Selby Road.
A West Yorkshire Police said: “The suspects were seen making off on foot through the nearby estate from the location where the car was found. Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.”
The West Yorkshire Police helicopter was mobilised as police combed the area in search of the three men.
Yesterday the post office, which is located just a few yards from nearby Templenewsam Halton Primary School, was cordoned off while officers carried out a detailed examination of the scene.
One resident, who lives nearby and did not wish to be named, told the YEP: “I was driving past and I saw all the police outside and I could hear the helicopter. I asked what had happened and they said the post office had been robbed. It’s shocking to think it’s so close to the school.”
Any witnesses or anyone with any information about the incident or the identities of those involved is asked to contact Stainbeck CID on 101 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
